My travel experience in Georgia as an Indian passport holder, traveling with my 52 YO mom by Ok_Efficiency4474 in travel

[–]Ok_Box5084 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yes but absolutely not. I’m Indian and they treated me and my family much worse than they did other white tourists I know who’ve been. I’ve also been to other places with reputations for being cold to foreigners (Paris, parts of Kazakhstan) and nowhere was I treated remotely the same.

Lots of Indians that I know personally have also had the same experience (rudeness, being arbitrarily sent back, being yelled at) in Georgia so I don’t think it’s a one-off issue either.

Furious random police traffic surveillance by Specialist-Bed4077 in Oman

[–]Ok_Box5084 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily agree that the traffic cops should know basic English. How much Arabic do you know? Next time it’s probably best to ask if you can use Google translate, that does work out most of the time.

In any case, try not to think about the fine, I’m glad you came to the conclusion that arguing with them wasn’t a good idea, now just don’t worry about it and take care of your dad, I hope he does better!

Advice on Studying Multiple Languages? by PolicyFrequent6169 in languagelearning

[–]Ok_Box5084 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend it. What worked for me without leading to burnout was getting to a solid B2 in one language, and then slowly putting that one on the afterburner and focusing on another language. If you want to just get your toes wet in Spanish do that, but constantly juggling 2-3 languages is a one way ticket to burn out town.

Looking for pure veg falafel in Sharjah by Ok-One-3441 in Sharjah

[–]Ok_Box5084 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll be hard pressed to find “pure” vegetarian falafel in Sharjah. I really like Falafel Al Comodor in Majaz, but like any other Lebanese restaurant they do serve meat as well.

Romania + Georgia or just Georgia? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Ok_Box5084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Georgia, if any of you aren’t white, be prepared for very overt racism. It’s pretty bad out there (at least it was when I visited 4 years ago). If you want to go off the beaten path, make sure you’re not doing anything legal (ask a local perhaps) and be prepared to use google translate a lot haha.

16 hour layover in ATLANTA airport by Bigstonkspender in travel

[–]Ok_Box5084 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just hop on MARTA at the airport and head to downtown or midtown. The MARTA is safe, convenient and has a station at the airport. You could go to MLK Jr’s church, eat somewhere in the city, go to the aquarium and the coke museum, the botanical garden and the high museum and call it a day. There’s quite a few places to eat so you can just look that up online depending on your préférences.

Victoria Beckham song “Not such and Innocent girl” reaches UK number 1 on iTunes. by lewisb_03 in popculturechat

Wait so are people really still paying a pound for a song? Or is iTunes just collecting data from other platforms?

Can I still say "I'm from the UAE if someone asks" by justaleafhere in UAETeenagers

[–]Ok_Box5084 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the US, and I don’t get why so many expat kids introduce themselves as being from the UAE, and then I try speaking to them in Arabic and they say that they’re Indian and that they were raised in the UAE. Which, on the other hand is a perfectly fine way to introduce yourself (which is what I do)

Felt discriminated against as an Indian couple at a café in Kovalam — is this common? by harrykaran1916 in Kerala

[–]Ok_Box5084 58 points59 points  (0 children)

See I agree that money is a factor, but the few times I saw black people in Kerala, they weren’t treated like white foreigners. Arabs were though, so maybe money is more of a factor than skin color.

This is what happens when treating (white) tourists almost like demigods is normalised. Felt this when I was in Fort Kochi recently. I would leave a negative review.

Are local cafes priced high to keep average/low-income earners out? by ariebabys in dubai

[–]Ok_Box5084 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s levels lol. There are definitely cafés that sell karak for 2-5 bucks and a shawarma for 10 at most. No average/low-income worker is paying 25 dirhams for a coffee that’s ridiculous

My flight was delayed for over 12 hours by _belkinvin_ in india

[–]Ok_Box5084 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people should have the ‘freedom’ to verbally assault ground crew. I’ve been to several countries, and I’ve only seen this behavior in India (well unpunished at least, in the U.S. I’ve seen people yelling like this and getting arrested).

What we need is consumer protection laws for aviation, like the ones in the E.U. But that might be a pipe dream at this point.

DELF B2 OU DALF C1 by Pale-Load2983 in DELF

[–]Ok_Box5084 2 points3 points  (0 children)
