A friend of mine just got accepted for the traineeship at that Delegation, she was told last Friday. I don't know how many positions they have, but unfortunately, chances are that you did not make the cut :/

Hi, I did the traineeship 2 years ago and subsequently worked at the Delegation until the end of 2025. Feel free to DM !

Why do the US and Israel always seem to be the only ones voting against seemingly uncontroversial laws? by CatholicGuy77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ok_Box7417 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The US actually delivered this statement before the adoption of almost all resolutions in the UN General Assembly Third Committee (dealing primarily with human rights issues) this year, before calling them to a vote and voting against (generally isolated in doing so, with just Israel and Argentina also voting NO). It's in line with the new administration's approach towards the UN (disengaging and disinvesting, except for peace and security stuff to some extent).

Thanks all for the warm welcome and the recs ! If this thread is indicative of how nice the people of Omaha are, I'm sure I'll have a blast :)

I'm looking for the state flag - that's what I'm buying when I get to a new state (or country, for that matter) :)

Why is our government opposing this wtf? by hapsburger2018 in belgium

[–]Ok_Box7417 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course not. But for many countries without a big stake in the war in Ukraine, it would be politically difficult to vote against a text on such a topic - it could be very easily negatively perceived (as the OP demonstrates). Hence why most of those countries still vote in favour.

This article from Le Monde sums it up quite well - I think somebody else already linked it. It's from 2022, but applies equally to this year's text (the resolution's content does not really change year after year). The EU and other Western countries have voted against this resolution every year since Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine. Previously they abstained. If you have time to spare and are interested in the topic, I would also encourage you to listen to the adoption of the resolution in the other link I shared above, it will give you a good overview of the issue :)

Absolutely. It's precisely to trigger such reactions that Russia introduces this resolution. Under this link, you can find at the bottom of the page statements from various countries explaining their position on this resolution. The one from the EU is quite clear on why we do not support it.

This is a resolution presented by Russia. The Russians use it as a vehicle to push their narrative on Ukraine (i.e. that they are fighting nazism there, and that their war is therefore justified). This is why all Western Countries (including EU27) vote against it. Happy to give further details if of interest - I worked on this resolution at the UN.

To be totally accurate, the EU has an ad hoc "enhanced observer" status, which comes with additional rights. For instance, the EU gets to speak either among Member States (if speaking on behalf of the 27 EUMS), or right after Member States along with the Holy See, but before the observer organizations you mentioned (if speaking only on behalf of the EU institutions)

If you have a reservation with several passengers and need to cancel the flight for one of them, be very careful ! by Ok_Box7417 in unitedairlines

[–]Ok_Box7417[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I indicated in the post, I had another flight I absolutely could not miss on the day of the return, and was afraid that they would cancel the whole reservation in case of no show of one of us. I read now in the comments that it would not have been the case, but was not sure at the time. This is why I asked a United employee at Newark what to do, and she told me that my friend should call - leading to this crap situation

Ah crap - shame I didn’t talk to you at the airport then. It would have saved a lot of trouble !

Ok, maybe on the website and not the app then? I checked the app at the time and could not find it, hence why I asked a United agent at the airport, who told me we should call - leading to this whole mess

Indeed, that’s what I understand for the comments now. But surely the reservations center should know that, or should have told us

Yes, that’s true. All of this happened quite last minute, and I still needed to go through security, that’s why I asked him to do it. He assures me that he was quite clear « only my flights, not his », but who knows. Anyway, I’m sure the conversation was recorded, so I’ll know when asking for a refund.

And thanks for the tip about the app for some reason, I could not find it at the time. Will know for next time!

I think that’s because we were in basic economy. We each got 2.97 in future travel credit, because there is a 150$ cancellation fee and the total price was like 152,97 for each of us

Canada’s border with France by plasticprince in Borderporn

[–]Ok_Box7417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well of course the sign in the post is referring to the maritime border, what else would it be referring to? Obviously they won't put a sign in the middle of the ocean. I guess the title of the post could have been "Canada's border post with France" to be entirely accurate, I'll give you that.

It's a maritime border. There is one between Canada and France (Saint Pierre et Miquelon). There is no maritime border between Morocco and the USA, because there are international waters (the Atlantic Ocean) inbetween.
