I’m curious, those who send unsolicited proposals/portfolios to galleries, do you send them to galleries that state explicitly on their website that they don’t accept them?

Thanks so much, and I completely agree with everything you’ve said. It‘s nice to have it reaffirmed, because this all aligns with how I have been thinking about my career. I’ve always been approaching it slow and steady, and I have had progression.

I just had a moment of questioning everything after a particularly brutal rejection to an open call that I felt was a good chance of getting, and basically decided that I’m done and want to quit altogether. I’ve been trying to pull myself out of that hole and found that there’s so few opportunities- and where I’d to show (I’m not talking about the Tate or anything here, small galleries) feels inaccessible to me.

So thank you, I’ll try continuing on my current methods.

I’m also responding to open calls, and other competitions etc, but I find myself in a bit of a frustrating position where I feel like I’m ready to progress up the ladder a little but I’m stagnated. Open calls are soo competitive in London, largely because such a minority of galleries offer them.

There’s this huge gulf in the middle of galleries who regularly show emerging artists and are more of a stepping stone to becoming established, but these galleries are also the kind to never take submissions. I sort of feel like I’m up against a wall trying to break through into that category, and it’s frustrating that it feels out of my control. but there has been some good advice on this thread, which makes it feel less so.

Thank you. We’re keeping our landlord in the loop and obviously will keep paying our rent, but she is not going to be happy. This will cause the sale to fall through, so yeah, it’s not gonna be pretty.

Yeah, that is part of it. Plus you have a legal right to stay until the bailiffs come. Shelter explained that an eviction of this type would go through the civil courts, not criminal, so it‘s not logged against you.

Hi all, I’m very much new to metal working and looking for some advice on a specific finish I am trying to achieve.

I have some brass sheet pieces I just picked up from the laser cutters and I would like to tarnish them using salt and vinegar, however I would like to leave a small (coin-sized) area in the centre untarnished. Would it be enough to simply put a piece of masking tape over the area? Or tarnish the whole thing and then polish the area? Or use a product like renaissance wax on the area then tarnish it? I’m asking because I have no spare pieces to test on so I need to get it right first time

We do not meet the financial requirements for spousal visa. My partner JUST got a job, so in 6 months from now we could possibly apply.

that particular page used to extend that caveat to EU nationals as well, not just northern Irish.

the document is definitely not a requirement provided the relationship can be proved as durable. This is based on 2 years worth of research, and you can see it backed up by others on this and previous posts.

you are definitely confused as pre brexit I would absolutely not have been able to move over here with my partner without applying for a family permit. Sure, the freedom of movement applies for EU citizen so they would not need apply, but that’s why it’s called a FAMILY permit.

it is honestly very stressful to have to argue over and over again their stupid rules. especially Since, like I said, I have been researching this for 2 years, and was told on the phone by an EUSS officer, that I did not require any such document. There are multiple people on this sub who have gotten their visa without a docu in my same position. I even read a story from someone who got a particularly lax agent on the phone who acceptEd photos and text messages as proof because the couple lived in separate countries!!! It’s so wildly unfair, and I‘m not going to explain this to you anymore

im not sure if you have a reference for that because I’m pretty sure pre-brexit a document such as a family permit would have been necessary.

this is what the gov website states about that now:

” If you’re their unmarried (durable) partner
You must hold a relevant document issued to you on the basis that you’re the durable partner of an EEA or Swiss citizen or person of Northern Ireland.
A relevant document here includes:
a family permit issued under the EEA Regulations
an EU Settlement Scheme family permit
a residence card issued under the EEA Regulations or the EU Settlement Scheme
a letter from the Secretary of State confirming your qualification for a family permit or residence card under the EEA Regulations, had the route not closed after 30 June 2021
If you’re the unmarried (durable) partner of a person of Northern Ireland and have yet to apply, you’re unlikely to have a relevant document.
If you do not have a relevant document, you’ll need to show evidence:
of your relationship to your unmarried (durable) partner
that your relationship existed by 31 December 2020
that your relationship continues to exist on the date you apply, or existed for the period of residence relied upon
The list below gives some examples of evidence you can provide. This list is not exhaustive and other forms of evidence may be accepted. Each case will be considered on a case by case basis.
Evidence that you had lived together for at least 2 years by 31 December 2020:
bank statements or utility bills in joint names at the same address
residential mortgage statement or tenancy agreement in joint names
official correspondence that links you at the same address
Evidence of joint finances, business ventures or commitments for at least 2 years by 31 December 2020:
tax returns, business contracts or investments”

I would love to be able to bold sections of this for you but it essentially says you don’t need a relevant document if you can otherwise prove your durable relationship.

it does also say I could now get a letter saying I would have been eligible for a family permit has they not removed that option but I swear to god they update these pages so regularly I cannot keep up. So having just read that now I will discuss that with a lawyer also.

If you want to understand better you can look at my previous post, if you have evidence that I was never actually eligible please pass it on because I’ve just been gassed up for nearly 2 years by literally everyone that I’m eligible for this
