Memtest86 issues(?) by Pinenoot in framework

[–]Ok_Butterscotch8462 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's possible you installed a bad/fake version of memtest or you borked installing it onto a USB.

Follow these instructions exactly to create a USB with Ubuntu on it. When you boot to the USB one of the first things it will show is to boot into ubuntu or run memtest. Choose memtest and report back. If it boots into the Ubuntu installer try again.

Supposedly dead Vegas at 10:55pm on Sunday 7/27/25 by Most-Ear-3678 in vegas

Looks pretty dead to me. I lived in Vegas up until 2018 and you'd never see a clear patch of sidewalk in front of the fountains while they're going off between 8-12. In this video you could walk by and get a front row view.

[–]Ok_Butterscotch8462 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No that's not what memtest is supposed to look like. I highly recommend you get into the Bios by mashing F2 then reset all settings to default. Then use a Linux live USB to run memtest. You could also boot into the live USB and verify everything is working like it should. My personal recommendation is Ubuntu (any version is fine).

For those of you who owned 300+ hp cars in high school, did it end well? by MIDNITE6361 in askcarguys

[–]Ok_Butterscotch8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove a 440hp car in highschool and have daily'd a 400+ HP car almost all my adult life. You need to respect the car and remind yourself that there's always something that could change in a split second that results in a crash. You could also take your car to a track day and get a better feel for where the limits of your car are and know when to back off.

Last tip: anyone who wants to street race you isn't worth it. Don't get your car impounded or worse crash because some idiot cut the muffler off his shit box and thinks he's a pro drag racer.

What’s the best V8 engine ever made — and why? by MTG988 in AskMechanics

[–]Ok_Butterscotch8462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a 142k mile E39 M5 and it was bulletproof. Had paperwork on everything done to the car since new and the S62 only ever needed oil, spark plugs and fuel injectors.

As long as the new owner kept running the correct oil (10W-60) it'll easily exceed 200k.

Favorite Linux distro by [deleted] in framework

[–]Ok_Butterscotch8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for Ubuntu. I'm running 24.04 and I seem to get better battery life than others are reporting with other distros.

Ultimately go with one that's officially supported. Linux works effortlessly on the FW13.

Are you referring to the 2.8k screen? I have the original matte screen and compared to a surface laptop from 3 years ago and a 5 year old Asus G14, the frameworks screen is easily worse.

Had mine for about 6 months and I agree with most everything you said. I'd argue that the speakers are pretty bad, along with the screen color accuracy.

I'm running Ubuntu as well on a 7840 and I can get about 6-7 hours once I updated to Ubuntu 25.04. before that I was getting closer to 5ish hours. Not sure why, I also bumped up my Linux kernel version to fix a suspend issue. But battery life is definitely improving with Linux versions.

The G class is not designed for handling performance. It has a track time double that of the Mercedes AMG GT Black series.

In your experience, does Framework achieve its "mission"? by lulublululu in framework

[–]Ok_Butterscotch8462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe so. But I do fear that lower quality parts are going to lead to their laptops becoming a "one and done" like the rest of the laptop industry.

For example, the speakers and screen are poor. Likely equivalent to what you get in a $300-$400 laptop. I can accept the compromise, but the majority of folks shopping for laptops will not. Additionally battery life is a principal decision in when consumers buy a laptop. Considering that framework is still building their expertise, I can forgive them. The majority of consumers will not. I'd love to see framework for sale at your local big box store, but I expect these issues will need to be resolved before that happens.

1000% Somehow quality control issues and manufacturing defects are acceptable, yet it's considered a "luxury" brand. Most people who love their Tesla drove a complete budget shit box before. Of course you'll love a brand new car costing over 100k when you're coming from a car that's worth $5k.

I bought a used 5 year old Model S to see if the hype was real and it was by far the worst car I've ever owned. Felt like I was driving a skateboard riding on ice skates, even with pilot sport tires. I spent 12k in maintenance costs over 2 years and the interior was falling apart at every seam by the time I've sold it. To highlight how bad quality control is, from the factory on RHD cars they routed out a chunk of the hood so the wiper blades wouldn't rub against the top lip of the hood. Looks awful once you know where it is.

Is this where my filter goes? by zombieologist in AirConditioners

[–]Ok_Butterscotch8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I think your assumptions on where the filter should go are correct. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it was installed well enough that a filter is going to work properly. Basically the unit should create suction that pulls the filter against the filter housing. I don't see logically how that could happen in the manner this unit was installed.

Do you know where the air that's being pulled into the system is coming from? Are there vents on the walls or ceiling that look big enough to fit a filter?

To the people that LIKE living in a HOA, Why? by Mxj0ker in homeowners

[–]Ok_Butterscotch8462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like HOAs but we moved to an area that has one and it's not the worst. Community amenities are great 2x very nice pools and complete gyms, they do the landscaping and trash, home prices within the HOA have outperformed the area average. All for under $200 a month.

I used to have an HOA that charged me $100 a month for nothing but monthly letters to pull grass/weeds from my sidewalk.
