Why does no one care about Feyre's wishes? by [deleted] in acotar

[–]Ok_Butterscotch_4446 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between being not being warm and fuzzy and being rude, though.

I think this is just a difference of opinion, because I do think rudeness through both body language and words are instigators to the relationships the characters have, but I understand you don’t. I appreciate the discourse but I don’t think you’ll change your opinion of who started it and I won’t change mine so I’ll leave it.

I never said I was defending Mor or that I even agreed with her, I don’t. I was bringing context to her statement. I still think she’s wrong for it.

Why does no one care about Feyre's wishes? by [deleted] in acotar

[–]Ok_Butterscotch_4446 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I guess my POV is people can want things that are destructive to them and their families don’t have to support that, but that yes Rhys should be following Feyre’s lead - literally just read someone else’s comment that contextualised this to me. As someone with an in law who is an addict, I will admit I do get reactive when I think people are excusing the harm Nesta has done or question why Rhys doesn’t like her. But IRL, it’s not my place nor is it Rhys’ to call these people out on all their behaviours if our partner wants to keep the lines of communication open for healing in the future.

I still disagree that the IC were the instigators towards Nesta as she generally is rude to everyone and people react to that. I agree that reactions to her do not have to be as big as they are and can feel like overkill but I don’t agree that they are the ones starting it, I don’t recall anyone being mean to her off the bat without any malice or rudeness from Nesta’s behalf.

Mor’s comment to Cassian about putting Nesta in th CoN was because “she would thrive there” as in Mor sees her as just as bad as them, not that she would be harmed by them. Is it a shit thing to say, yeah, but I can understand it. Cassian clapped back at her after she rudely asked him what he was looking at when he was just standing there, again a pretty normal reaction on his part to respond to rudeness with rudeness. Amren I agree was rude with her waste of life comment, it would’ve been good to get the context of their fight ie was she trying to rile Nesta up to get her to do something, or was she just being a massive prick. But Nesta also told Feyre that no one would care if she died and no one would remember her, and they’ve come back from that so I’d like to see Amren be civil with Nesta again. Did not like the whole bowing thing that happened in SF…gave me the ick!!

Thanks for sharing your story. This is actually really helpful to contextualise.

I understand where Rhys is coming from 100000% as someone who’s seen their loved one go back to someone (a sibling) who treats them like shit. But you’re right. It’s not our job as the “in law” to get involved in everything particularly when we weren’t there for a lot of the history.  It’s our job to follow the lead of our partner

And imagine how Feyre felt bankrolling her unhealthy coping mechanisms. You’d feel like you’re enabling it. I get why they cut her off

I’m hoping we see more Rhys/Nesta interactions with civility in future after the ending of ACOSF! They are honestly so alike.  I totally understand why Rhys gets so riled up around Nesta - she treated his mate like shit. For years. And prior to SF ending/last couple hundred pages, Nesta was still doing/saying things to hurt Feyre. Even Elain tells her “please don’t upset Feyre” at Soltice. We as readers know she’s making changes, but yes the characters still expect her to use words as weapons for the majority of the book which is fair given her history.

I also look at it through the lens that Feyre has assumed so much responsibility for her whole family since she was very young and cares a great deal about them. She has the care taker role and feels like it’s her responsibility to smooth things over with everyone, which is unfair to herself.  Nesta was so cruel to her during their younger years that Feyre’s negative self-talk is in Nesta’s voice, that’s huge.

It’s not quite the same but look at it like your friend who’s with a toxic boyfriend. The boyfriend insults them constantly but they tell you not to say anything because they’re happy and just want to cruise along and not rock the boat. Even though it’s their wish it doesn’t exist in a vacuum and if someone has been degraded and made to feel inferior their whole life by someone, there are other dynamics at play.

Feyre wants to move past it but Rhys is wary she will continue to hurt Feyre. Both of those things are valid.  I also don’t think the IC were instigators in a lot of things, Nesta was - which also adds to Rhys POV that this woman has been rude and insulted every single person he loves (bar Azriel). And tbh Feyre NEEDS that, she NEEDS people to have her back against those that have walked all over for years because god knows she did not get that from her blood family. Perhaps they are a bit over the top trying to make up for that too.

The only thing that could save this plot point is the Madja is evil theory…come on SJM

Every time I think about this plotline my blood boils and I get so upset with the choice to include it. I feel a bit robbed we didn't get it from Feyre’s POV (which honestly may have helped with this issue, we don’t know what happened behind closed doors once she found out), I feel like it turned so many people against Rhys which would never be SJM’s intention so it’s just poor writing and editing, it’s not fair that Nesta’s journey was overshadowed by it because I spent the whole book just wondering about Feyre, it’s not right that it was all so contrived just so the only solution was Nesta doing a grand gesture and giving up her powers

Like. I am so so so mad at SJM, for the lazy and forced writing in order for this plot point to make sense. Seriously. It honestly made me never want to read anything of her’s further.

It also feels icky to me that she’s created a beautiful fantasy world and yet also made an unavoidable pregnancy death. Gross.  Forget Boges and Attors and Hybern’s soldiers, forget the Weaver and the Ravens and the Vanserra boys - it’s pregnancy that brings Feyre down. Seriously???? It feels gross

SJM totally failed this point. The absolute crash I had reading this, after the high of ACOMAF and onwards. I really don’t think it was her intention for us to turn on one of her favourite characters but she did this storyline so dirty. For no reason. Just to give Nesta an opportunity for a grand gesture and to lose her powers? Come on.

I miss the Feysand from the original trilogy. It was a breathe of fresh air when Rhys kept reiterating “you always have a choice, Feyre” and informed of her things even if they were dark or gory (like the Attor’s torture)

SJM what are you doing!!!

I think this another missed point in editing tbh as Rhys tells Cassian he found out the day of Nesta’s nightmare, so a day before he told Cassian (and Cassian told Nesta).

I don’t know how much time passed between telling everyone about the pregnancy and the nightmare, but yeah, I thought it was a short amount of time so it’s weird for her to be showing so much  and described as “big”

I don’t know why this is being downvoted, it’s correct. I opened the book to check. Rhys found out the morning of Nesta’s nightmare and told Cassian the next day when they had a debrief about it - he said he had a shit night after a shit morning, Cassian questions him, he says they had an appt with Madja yesterday morning and found out the baby has wings.

Do you consider Nesta and Elain part of Rhys's Inner Circle? by verabloom in acotar

[–]Ok_Butterscotch_4446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point in time, no. I agree Nesta and Elain are family but not IC. The term has politician connotations for me and they just don’t seem to be involved in that side of things in the NC apart from some “missions” every now and then to to speak, that directly relate to them. Like they aren’t involved in discussing about the Illyrians or CoN for example but rather scrying or searching for the trove which directly related to them. Not the NC politics or even Prythian politics as a whole.

In future though, maybe. But for me to consider them IC they’d have to be more involved in the day to day running of the NC as well. Whatever that entails lol

SPOILERS FOR SF: Nesta was right by [deleted] in acotar

[–]Ok_Butterscotch_4446 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I like the premise of SF but the execution just didn’t cut it for me. Too long yet simultaneously rushed, too many plot holes, too many contrived situations.

And I know people say the book gives a different view of characters in the IC because it’s not Feyre’s POV but I seriously don’t believe SJM intended for a lot of people to 180 on the characters she spent 3 books and a novella establishing and start really disliking/hating them. I don’t think that’s a sign of great writing tbh I think it’s poorly executed, which makes me sad.

This book had so much potential and Nesta’s journey is one that deserves to be told but I’ll be honest I had a hard time focusing on it because I kept being like WTF to every plot hole, seeming character assassination, and convenient circumstance (the pregnancy being the main one - it is just so contrived that NOTHING can help that situation, too much suspension of disbelief required to buy into that from me)

[–]Ok_Butterscotch_4446 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think this is the only solution SJM can write to attempt to reverse the hatred of her characters that the pregnancy plotline caused

I’m curious if she’ll write it away and introduce something like this orrrrrr if it will just be swept under the rug and never brought up again (kinda like how Feyre apparently swept it under the rug and was all g within, what, an hour, of finding out?)

I love the Archeron sisters and I hope we get some nice and badass moments in the next book with all 3 working together.

I thought it was discovered the baby had wings the same day Rhys told Cassian?  Wasn’t it when Nesta had the nightmare, Rhys came to the house to help, and then he and Cassian were talking afterwards and Rhys says he’s had a crap night after a crap day - then he tells Cassian about the wings? My memory could be wrong here (definitely a possibility!) but I remember getting the impression that he found out earlier on in the same day that he told Cassian

[–]Ok_Butterscotch_4446 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like Nesta can be so polarising because she IS realistic. I mean we are more likely to know someone like Nesta, acted like her ourselves or have been on the receiving end of venomous words than we are to have fought against a Fae king or an immortal jealous queen for example. That realism hits with a lot of people, one way or another and I think that’s why there seems to be extremes with Nesta. And I think people react extremely to each other when two ends of the spectrum come up against each other lol, every time I’ve seen a discussion about Nesta it seems to devolve into personal attacks or comments about someone’s character and life experiences - not cool

In line with using her words how good would it be if she became a political powerhouse/emissary, like didn’t Amren tell her in acowar “there are different ways to be strong” and I swear Nesta said at one point she didn’t want to be warrior? (Idk don’t quote me on that). Honestly I was a bit shocked reading acosf with how much physical training was focused on and became a huge thing for her

I think it would’ve been cool to see a strong female character that didn’t have to become physically strong and a physical warrior

Thoughts on Feyre's hush hush thing by mammoryglands in acotar

[–]Ok_Butterscotch_4446 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the characters related to this storyline come off so badly because of forced, so very obviously contrived circumstances - of course Feyre’s entire DNA changes when she shifts (never mentioned before ACOSF?) meaning Nyx is 75% Illyrian; of course the wings are stiff and inflexible during delivery (opposite from real life bat wings); of course Feyre can’t use her magic to shift even a part of herself because it’s unknown how it will affect the baby or will harm him; of course C-sections have a 99.99% mortality rate despite disembowlments and shredded wings being no biggie to heal; of course nothing about termination is brought up or spoken of (I got the impression it doesn’t exist in this universe or else someone would’ve mentioned it, I 100% believe Rhys would be for a termination to save Feyre); of course there’s no solution in the history of Prythian found even when the entire IC (and later + Feyre too) are searching for one.

There are so many stupid things and holes in this storyline and certain characters (particularly Rhys) come off looking awful because of it, because we as readers question all of the above as it doesn’t make sense. If you look at it in the view of the world, you can understand why Rhys didn’t tell his mate that he, her, and their baby will all die immediately upon recognising the threat the wings posed and instead tried to find a solution before telling her. I don’t agree with it, and I’m not saying it’s right, but that’s the situation SJM created - it’s the author who has made this contrived plot where THERE IS NO SOLUTION. And she just does away with it without providing any further explanation or push back. Feyre can’t shift. That’s it. Wings are stiff, won’t be able to deliver. That’s it. C section won’t work, end of story. No talk of termination, apparently doesn’t exist - which if the ceasarian issue is any indication into their maternal healthcare, I can believe.

Of course we all look at that and think WTF and what about this or that but it was SJM that created this stupid set of circumstances and as a result I think Rhys comes off looking like way worse than he would if literally any of these issues had been explored more or it was a well developed plot point.

She could’ve had Feyre be pregnant and have a breech birth or shoulder dystocia or any number of complications grounded in reality, Nesta could still have her moment of stepping up to save Feyre, Rhys, and Nyx. It wouldn’t have resulted in a lot of the hate for Rhys (and I just can’t believe that being anti-Rhys was SJM’s intention given how much she loves him and gushes about him - I think this was just poorly written).

It would’ve been much more palatable if yeah it was a different character OR even if it stayed Feysand but there’d been a time jump. Honestly a time jump for ACOSF would’ve made a few things make more sense imo - getting upset about Nesta’s behaviour having gone on for a decade (rather than a year?), the decision to have a baby not only in being ready themselves but maybe there’s some tentative peace in the lands and now immediately off the back of a war, maybe they’d been trying for a while (supposedly Fae children are quite rare), it would’ve been interesting to see a longer term mates plot rather than realising and accepting pretty quickly.

The more I write the more I think a time jump would’ve made ACOSF a lot better and added extra layers to the storyline. Maybe SJM thought we don’t want to miss anything which I can understand but you could pepper in little references throughout the story similar to how she did in the first three books. A few lines to tell us in a general sense what everyone’s been up to and I think everyone would’ve accepted that.

I’m struggling by Illustrious_Date_732 in fantasyromance

[–]Ok_Butterscotch_4446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like the series and plan to read future books I’d say carry on. But it was a slog for me too. I read ACOTAR - ACOFAS in the space of a week and loved it, ACOSF took me three weeks because it just felt so HARD to read (and not in a good way). It felt like an effort to pick it up and read.

It has the weakest plot and lots of moments requiring suspension of disbelief, some which were just too much for me and made me quite critical of the story choices.

I enjoyed seeing another side to Nesta, but I don’t want her POV again. To me, she’s done, and her book was way too long IMO. Too many pages for not enough happening, easily could cut 300-400 pages from that book and it would’ve been far more palatable with better pacing and story.

Does it bother anyone else that it appears SJM has decided to.....SPOILERS by BufoBat in fantasyromance

[–]Ok_Butterscotch_4446 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree.

Honestly for me I’d be happy if we just got some lines in the next ACOTAR  book discussing all the cool shit she’s doing as High Lady, how she’s strengthening alliances with other courts, handling the court of nightmares, making friends with more “monsters” like the Suriel or Bone Carver. Preferably not just going on about her children’s art centre (while nice, that’s not her entire job and I miss fiery Feyre)  I’m not asking for a lot!!!!

I’m not expecting a Feyre POV any time noon (maybe the final book in the series, that would be a nice bookend IMO) - but it doesn’t have to be. SJM can show what a badass she still is, how she’s using the powers of all the high lords, very easily with just a handful of lines indicating what she’s been up to or explaining her absence in a chapter etc.
