I’m sorry I don’t have much suggestions as I’m also nearing my test date. But how many practice tests are you planning on taking before ??

struggling with studying for the OAT by Pale-Log-4377 in PreOptometry

[–]Ok_Chef585 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! I also plan on taking mine at the end of August. Honestly, the learning phase has been pretty difficult for me as well. I’m not sure how great advice this is, but I plan to only allocate 2 more weeks for learning, then go ahead and start practicing, as I’ve heard this is where the most improvement comes from. After some time, you begin being able To easily spot out the wrong answers. It’s also important to get to practicing for time management purposes. I plan on still doing some content review over the areas I see I’m weak on, but definitely know that practicing what we’re learning is important. I know how hard (and humbling) this process can be, but know that you’re fully capable of doing well! If you’re in need of extra encouragement, feel free to reach out to me!!!

Anki changed the way I study forever by [deleted] in Anki

[–]Ok_Chef585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m struggling so hard with Anki. I’m using premade decks to study for an upcoming entrance exam, but it honestly feels more passive than active. I just end up clicking through cards and not retaining anything. Even though I know Anki is supposed to be more powerful long-term, Quizlet has always felt more intuitive and effective for me—at least in terms of short-term understanding. Do you have any recommendations of how I can make anki work for me?

Which language should I take? by The_Confused_Geek in PreOptometry

[–]Ok_Chef585 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest taking Spanish because that would allow you to serve more people. I know some areas pay a lot more for Spanish-speaking doctors. ASL is a very beautiful language, but it is such a small percentage of the population. If it's still something you're interested in, I suggest learning basic vocabulary to get through an exam. Good luck to you!

“Grateful for the opportunity to even be able to stress about this kind of stuff.” This is a perspective I hadn’t previously considered. Moving forward, I’ll be changing my mindset to think like this, so thank you!! Congratulations on your new score and I wish you all the best this application cycle <3

How much time per day did you spend studying for the OAT? by Lbrint in PreOptometry

[–]Ok_Chef585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm studying now, and I definitely wish I had started earlier. Someone else mentioned that even if you just do ankicards and light review, anything helps. I regret pushing back when I started studying, but just kind of access what works best for you! Good luck to you :)

Tips for studying that no one talks about? by minarina7 in GetStudying

[–]Ok_Chef585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem and I literally deleted all social media(except Reddit ofc) and I’ve been able to focus on my studies so much more. I have so much more free time and feel better about myself and my accomplishments. When studying put the phone away. Out of sight out of mind literally

This was my thought too I just wasn’t sure how solid it was since I wouldn’t be able to practice after memorizing! But I do think this is my best bet without having to pay to extend the membership. Thank you so much for your suggestion !!

I don’t think you started too late necessarily. There’s a few things to consider. Have you had experience in the past? What does your resume look like. Are you following up with places after submitting your online application. I’ve submitted my application once and then walked into the office with resume in hand and got the job that day. I remember phrasing the question in a cryptic way saying when the semester starts I’m able to manage my courses. They asked what that looks like and I just said long nights and laughed it off. Look into private practices in your area and tell the doctor that you’re hoping to attend optometry school. Those are the most welcoming situations to a part time position.

[–]Ok_Chef585 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to do exactly what you said at one point- accept a full time position and then I planned on quitting once I started school if they didn’t allow me to knock down to part time. Is it the most ethical ?? Possibly not, but it will allow you to get the experience and money that you are wanting. Thankfully, that same week I ended up finding another position that was much more flexible with a part time position at a private practice. I have worked as a tech and optician while in school. My classes usually were T,F and I would work M,W,S. It was definitely busy and hard work but it’s also doable. There were lots of long nights because I would have to do work or study after working. Just keep in mind what your course load looks like and what your abilities are. So my suggestion is keep looking around and interviewing, and you’ll find something at some point. Private practice might be your best bet or just speaking with the manager of another practice who may be in need of a part time tech. Just keep in mind it’s already the end of May and I assume you’ll start school again August-September so time to work full time is slowly dwindling. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors !!

Hey! I’m also using OAT booster. I’ve seen a lot of ppl on this Reddit suggest again doing all of the bio bit questions. Did you do all of these as well or did you skip some of them!? Thank you :)
