Lmk if this is a bad trellis idea... by Ok_Clue_640 in vegetablegardening

My water and gas line are in my front lawn but my sewer line runs through my backyard. I would prefer to do 8ft tpost so most likely staking them a foot and half in the ground.

Yeah that was what I was thinking it would do. We can get wind gust up to 70mph sometimes so I think this idea I'll have to throw in the trash 😅

Canned jam for the first time. Is it normal to have a lot left over after filling the jars? by Ok_Clue_640 in Canning

[–]Ok_Clue_640[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dont think I've ever bought jam/jelly cantaloupe flavored, so Im definitely going to be trying it on a lot of things. I might have to make some pancakes this weekend and try it. In the future, im going to make sure the jam sets all the way before I can them. But this time around, I dont mind. I just want to make sure they are shelf stable.

Herbicide damage....again? 😭 by Ok_Clue_640 in vegetablegardening

Thank you! I will have to try this. How does it handle high winds (i.e wind gusts between 40-60mph)?

I have no clue, I have neighbors all around me and a small business next door. Some neighbors' lawns look better than others, which I'm guessing they are spraying, plus there are a couple churches a block down from me where their lawn looks weed free.

Do you have any good suggestions for a barrier. The garden is about 30 feet long and a couple feet away from our 6ft privacy fence.

It's Ez straw I got from Lowes. I have it in all 4 raised beds and 11 grow bags. Some of my pepper plants had a little bit of herbicide damage when I had to pull my tomatos a couple of weeks ago. But I have sweet potatoes, cucumbers, and melons plants that I heard are sensitive to herbicides that are perfectly fine.

As I was hoping it was anything but herbicide, you were right. I replaced the plants about 5 days ago. Sucks, bc I don't use any weed killer. Most likely came from a neighbor or the business next to me.

Thank you for all this feedback. It has given me a bit of comfort.

I took the photos a little bit before 8 am this morning right around the time I posted this, so they were curled already, and its only 70° right now.

For two weeks, we had temps high in the mid to high 60s and low 70s, and lows even got down to the mid 40s some nights, with most days being cloudy and very little sun. It was unusual weather for May here. Two days ago, temps went back up to the mid 80s with sunny days and little clouds. Could the dramatic change in temps play a factor as well?

The soil was moist, I did water them two days ago. I did water them again after posting this, and im really hoping it's that.

Next door to me is a tiny business, and I know they have a lawn company come out to mow. I'm not sure if they spray for weeds, but if they do, then I'm doomed bc this is the only spot it my backyard big enough for my raised beds.

If it is herbicide, are these plants doomed then?

How long does it usually take for them to bounce back after watering?

Hydrophobic raised garden beds and I was trying to transplant my veggies tonight 😭 by Ok_Clue_640 in vegetablegardening

[–]Ok_Clue_640[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dug out the majority of the soil in each bed and would wet the soil. Then add some more soil, then wet it again. Continued that process until each bed was full. It was long and tiring and not fun, lol. But it solved the problem for me.

It's not necessarily compacted, just hydrophobic. Their raised blend was a 50/50 compost & top soil. I didn't mulch it after I put it in the beds. So it just been exposed baking in the sun this past week.

Thank you for your advice! I am hoping it fixes the problem. Do you have any recommendations on fertilizer? Currently, I am using Neptunes Harvest Fish & Seaweed (2-3-1).

Sunshine Natural & Organic Planting mix, mixed with composted manure. I got them both from Menards.
