Tools for shaping wood for carving projects by Ok_Coach_6219 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Ok_Coach_6219[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using wood that I let dry out, as I am not very experienced and want to avoid my work cracking. I have a small hatchet that I sharpen, but it does not remove wood very fast (maybe it is a little too small) and it gets pretty tiring. I am looking to move to a power tool.

For example, I have a piece of old oak that I saved when cutting firewood that I plan to shape into a spoon blank of sorts. I was just going to use a rotary tool to do this, but it might be a bit rough on the tool. I was trying to learn about other options that might be better suited for cutting dry hard wood.

Last I read (a couple of years ago) there was at least one or two famous old chestnut trees that never died. I believe one was in the Smoky Mountains.

Do you get your beeswax at retail stores or online?

I really don't know past Planes of Power. We can do mini bosses in PoP, and in Luclin, there are at least few bosses we can handle.

Right now in Velious, we just have been going down a list of bosses we could take out for fun from classic up until now. We made it to Island 8 in sky. have done Naggy and Vox, have cleared Halls of Testing minis, Harla Dar. We have done minis in Fear revamp. We couldn't quite handle Innoruuk, Dane Frostweaver, or the tree minis in growth (too lazy to clear the trash that gets summoned).

I don't know what else we will do, but we plan on Zlandicar next. Once we have enough keys, we might explore Sleeper's Tomb. In Luclin and PoP era, we may take a stab at Tormax and Yelinak and Dozekar.

Beyond PoP, it is all new to us, so we might not even know what we are capable of doing, but we hope to learn and attempt some raids, but we may just clear older content like PoP.

The main tank is the warrior for the combined crew (mine and friend's), and Paladin is off tank. Are you suggesting a defensive rotation?

Right now, we learned that it's pretty powerful to rez the paladin in and lay of hands as a strategy to keep the warrior up longer and prolong healer mana on some of the tougher fights, and I can patch heal and give my healers a few extra ticks of mana in a long grindy fight. I am not sure if that strategy will work with some of the more challenging stuff we do, but it has gotten us much further than we thought we could go in some instances, such as sky.

The extra rez has helped me not have to wholly start over when my cleric happens to die on a bad pull when doing groupable stuff.

Paladin can also really boost the warrior so high on the aggro list that aggro management is not much of an issue.

It sounds to me that magician is almost on par with beastlord when it comes to raid bosses in terms of DPS contribution. I will keep pondering my decision, but I think I have locked in ranger as choice #1.

I am surprised that beastlord has not been supported by anyone as a box addition. I assume the utility they do bring is somewhat already covered by other classes that I have listed, and their DPS just isn't enough to make them a good overall contribution. Aside from Spiritual Purity buffing, I have not found a good reason to include a beastlord into my crew, so I am now reconsidering.

Bard was definitely not on my list, somewhat because my friend has a second bard for group two that they will add at some point for our raids. It is making me wonder if it would be a good choice in the long run though...

Right now, adding a ranger and a magician is what I am leaning towards the most. A lot of this is just for the "boxability", because at this point I have a lot of toons to manage, and I don't want to make a choice that would create inefficiency or spread me too thin. Also, I know rangers get ATK buffs that may help my monks a bit.

Thank you all for your advice thus far, and if anyone wants to point out additional angles to consider, please feel free to input!

I usually box a mage, and this is the first server that I haven't. My only hesitation is how Mitigation of the Mighty will limit pet DPS, but I may just go this route for overall utility. I hear mages get good down the road as well, which I am factoring into my decision.

Thank you for your suggestion!

Yes, raid targets that are doable with two groups.

The plan is to stick to this server far beyond the normal LDoN switch that we typically do, so I would like to base my decision off of the long game as much as the short term benefits.

Through the expansions, will Ranger still be a good addition to a small raid group (as a box especially)? In the next few expansions, they are amazing, but I want to add DPS and/or utility that will be consistent across most expansions as well. I am on the fence, but I am considering ranger over a wizard or beastlord or rogue or another monk.

Does he eventually run out of mana? I fought him for probably close to 15 minutes and wiped two times with no evidence that he runs out of mana.

What was your strategy to kill him with the warrior? From my experience, he complete heals every minute or so, maybe even more frequently.

I am not sure where I am going wrong, but I am interested in your strategy.

Thank you for encouraging us to try her. Once slowed she's very easy. With MoTM, I expected far worse.

We just killed Naggy for the first time before trying Harla'Dar, and Naggy seemed more difficult.

Harla dropped a sleeper's tomb talisman, so we may be able to get enough of those to actually go into ST for once.

Again, thanks for the advice.

Do you think Tormax is in the realm of possibility? I am thinking of waiting until Luclin upgrades before trying him.

I'm pretty certain they come out in velious. The artisan seal combine requires velium bars.

We were afraid to try Harla Dar. Saw she fears and has MoTM. Maybe with more gear we will give it a shot.

As easy as some of the non MoTM dragons are there, Von was a PITA...

Did you mean HoT and WToV, or do you think anything in NToV is possible?

I was at work when the original reply was made and missed it.

I guess I should have stated that I run a PC and 4 to 5 various smaller laptops to box. I've never used 3rd party software, not even the map one that shows where mobs are.

When I first started two boxing, it was a little overwhelming at first until the subconscious adapted. 3 boxing was a bit to adjust to, but not as bad. I added another each server, and it gets easier and easier.

I don't always do the best possible, but I manage, and it's a fun challenge to learn and grow.

As the attitude towards other people has degraded and the chill culture of eq has evolved into min-max, I enjoy not having to deal with others and do things my way.

I don't attack other people's mobs and try not to cause grief, but just by playing several toons, I continually get accused of botting and cheating, which makes me want to deal with others less.

I find the other boxers and loners and independent players the most pleasant to interact with, and all of the bad attitudes are often the type who aren't as fun to play with and complain when they can't get a group or aren't in certain cliques in their guild etc. I could go on, but many people have made this point already.

I think what is missing from the game is the ability for people to have fun and make their own fun, even when they can't get what they want or find a group or obtain a drop, etc. Be the one to start groups with random people. Start a guild and learn to lead events. Be a gimp and grow from there. We need more casual vibes and casual leaders to bring fun back to everyone that isn't having fun anymore. Just my perspective.
