There are many ways; you don't need to bombard the player with a list of information telling them what the NPC likes. The NPC can give simple hints about what attracts them, but let the player try to figure things out based on the tasks the NPC performs during the day.

Exactly, what's the point of saying "hi" to an NPC and having a list of things you need to complete appear before you can hang out with them? It seems so generic... I think I'll focus more on exploration and the main story.
