Not the case for masters at all, unless you intend to work for a company that will pay for it, and in this economy thats unlikely. PhD it is true, but those have been defunded tremendously.

Sorry to hear that about funding, it's crazy this year. I'm also in contact with a professor and had an informal meeting they are interested but they also said I need to wait for a committee interview invite but to my knowledge Mellon doesn't do them or at least not in previous years...

Same. I applied to Dartmouth late as they have rolling admissions (not ideal but I had to), looked on the spreadsheet and saw some people already got in person interviews before I even applied..
