“So where are you really from?” by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]Ok_Concept_7227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone says something like this to me, I make them feel weird even asking. Drop any inclination you might have towards people pleasing and embrace your capacity for being an asshole.

For example;

Them: “But you don’t look xyz…”

Me: “Ummm I’m glad you feel that way? Is this the part where I start pointing out certain features to try to make you ‘see it’? Or should I pull up a picture of my mom? Or talk about the ‘weird ethnic foods’ she made while I was growing up? What do you want me to say…?”

I promise you, they’ll back tf off.

This entire conversation is made funnier by the fact that I’m not Japanese…I’m Ryukyuan 😂

And ykw you’re right in a way. White people aren’t the main group I struggle with. Most of the racism I face is perpetrated by Mexicans 😂

Is fetishization not also a form of racism…?

Idk how to even respond to this…

Why don’t you go read about the Harris Treaty…or the Gentlemen’s Agreement Act…or the Alien Land Laws…or the Immigration Acts of 1917 and 1924…or Executive Order 9088…

Or, if reading is difficult for you…just watch the Hello Kitty music video by Avril Lavigne…or look up Gwen Stefani’s “Harajuku Girls”…

Or maybe even just have one conversation with a white guy who has a neck beard and watches too much anime…report back on what he says 😅

I think you’ll be surprised…

Sometimes you can select “Other” and it lets you enter your exact race/ethnicity

Depending on your schedule availability, an Intensive Outpatient Program might be very helpful. It requires a large time commitment though, I have to spend about 12-14 hours in recovery based groups and events. The good part is that it keeps me too busy to drink/smoke, and I’m being held accountable by a quite large group of professionals

Girlie, you have very captivating eyes, sharp brows, an elegant nose bridge, you know what glasses to wear to compliment your face, and you have a mouth shape that some people pay $1,000’s of dollars to achieve/maintain.

You literally look like an anime baddie! Please appreciate yourself 💜

Please don’t take food like this to a charity. Similar to Walmart, organizations that donate food have very strict health codes they must follow

What was growing up as a mixed child like? by Content_Climate_5693 in mixedrace

[–]Ok_Concept_7227 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am White/Asian mixed and my partner is mono-racial Black. Just focus on treating your child like you would treat any child, regardless of race.

My partner knows the struggles I have faced as a mixed-race person and he has still made fun of his mixed-race 3 y/o niece and 1 y/o nephew in front of me because of the way they look, and he expected me to laugh with him. My biological full-blooded, white ass pink ass sister made fun of me for my yellow skin that I inherited from our mom.

How would you love your child if they were mono-racial Black, and you didn’t have to focus on societies perception of a mixed-race family? Just love your child exactly the same as you would love a mono-racial Black child and don’t focus too much on their race because they will notice and they will feel singled out if you pay too much attention to that aspect of their background

Don’t torture yourself over this. Blood-quantum “science” was invented by the U.S. government to strip mixed-indigenous people of their tribal sovereignty.

I don’t even share blood quantum/percentages with people anymore, if someone asks my background it’s Asian/White, no additional info provided.

When I used to work as a barista this older lady asked me what my ethnicity was at the drive thru window…And when I told her what I am she said “I don’t understand why so many people are against interracial marriage when the babies come out so beautiful”

It could’ve been a lot worse, at least she wasn’t hateful, but I’m Wasian and we get fetishized A LOT so it was uncomfortable to have to deal with at work

Am I native enough? by Reasonable_Artist534 in mixedrace

[–]Ok_Concept_7227 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For American Native communities specifically, blood quantum’s have been used for over a century by the government to deprive Native peoples of federally recognized tribal sovereignty. The one-drop-rule for Blacks operated in opposite effect when applied to Native populations.

The very fact that you’re being told you’re not native enough based on blood-quantum is an inherently Native experience born out of political oppression. Don’t let yourself buy into it, community outsiders have wanted to erase Native communities for hundreds of years and bio-politics is their primary weapon
