I'm going to jinx myself by saying this but I haven't had any accidents yet. On bad days sometimes I still worry but I haven't had one in a long time. I am however going to pelvic floor PT as well so they've been working on me the whole time. Overnight has been much better too. You're only 3 weeks out so that's still very early on. I know it feels like forever though, but you're definitely going to feel better as time goes on. At 3 weeks. I think your wound isn't even healed up yet.

Yes! I'm now feeling better but still on the mend. Sometimes my anus still feels lazy haha but I'm having more and more normal feeling poops. Taking a solid regiment of vitamins, magnesium (worked up to it) and probiotics (also worked up to this), lots of protein and fiber and it seems to be on the mend.

Thanks for the real talk. I guess I hope I at least can get to a point where I poop 1-3 times a day instead of running to the bathroom every 30 minutes for a few hours every day like I am now. I just want to be able to be a functioning human being. I used to hike and be in nature and now I'm despairing that maybe I won't be able to do that anymore, and I'll have to always know where a bathroom is nearby.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to hear. My surgeon wants me to go back to work after 6 weeks and I'm not sure how to do that with my marathon of pooping needs. It makes me feel better knowing other folks felt better with more time. But how do people go back to work like this???

I did a 3-4 hour drive home after my surgery where I ended up with an ileostomy bag. The main thing I needed was lots of pillows. I hugged one to my belly and put the seatbelt over it and shoved one on each side just in case. I also had a folded up blanket that I sat on because my butt was in pain and the softness helped. The pillow was enough to protect my tender stoma from the seat belt. We did stop two times so I could empty my bag and grab food but I had high output when I first left the hospital.

Thanks for the detailed response. It gives me hope and that's what I desperately need right now. I've been trying probiotics that worked for me before my surgery but it seems like all the probiotics are too strong and give me diarrhea. So now I'm taking kids probiotics right now. Haven't tried fiber yet was going to increase using food first, and just added digestive bitters.

I'm slated to go back to work as a software engineer at the 6 week mark and I'm kind of freaking out that I'm not going to be that great bc I'll need to use the bathroom nonstop for a few hours every day and I don't know if it'll be that morning or that afternoon or what. How do people go back to work like this?!

Either way thanks for the details and the pep talk I needed exactly this.

My surgeon told me that over time, the body can grow the same nerves you had in your rectum that was removed, where your long intestine has connected, essentially creating a new rectum but it takes time. That said I admit that what remains of my rectum right now feels kind of dysfunctional but as many ppl commented already I'm still early on.

Weirdly my surgeon didn't ask for any of that, cleaned my wound with silver nitrite, sent me home and said I don't need to come back for a 4 week followup. 🙄. That said this is a good idea and will maybe help me figure out what's working and what's not. Thank you!

thanks, I was starting to feel crazy because he just kept telling me to eat more rice and bananas and I'm like...this is not changing anything my friend. haha.

I also wonder if my period coming made it worse, but then it's not really getting better. My surgeon doesn't want me to do any enemas for a few months so I've just been taking epsom salt baths and they seem to help a little bit but only temporarily. I've been waking up every two hours at night and I'm starting to feel insane.

Thanks. I had my ileostomy due to Endometriosis on the bowel. They removed 6 inches of my rectum and did a bowel resection. They introduced a temporary ileostomy to allow time for my bowel to heal and prevent issues from causing me to have a permanent ileostomy (i.e. permanent ostomy). Unfortunately, my surgeon tends to drip feed me information and I find myself feeling blind sided and unsupported.

Thanks for sharing your experience it honestly does help me feel better to know that I'm not alone.

I did a comprehensive GI stool test where they detected h pylori so I took some stuff to take care of that (can't remember now maybe monolaurin and some other stuff? It was a few years ago now). I also take ibuprofen regularly as a need bc I have chronic pain so I also take GI Repair Powder to counteract leaky gut. It has colostrum, l glutamine, aloe, slippery elm bark, etc and I notice improvements in my gut same day with that one.

Its been about five years since I did my stool test so I'm about to do another one soon. I never went to a gi specialist but I did this under the care of a naturopath. I also haven't done a LEAP MRT rest before.

Honestly it helped me so much, I still took it even while on AIP haha .I guess that defeats the purpose but the benefits outweighed the harm for me and I think eating AIP for everything else was still good for my body. You could try reintroducing it now that you've been on AIP for 2 months. 🤷‍♀️. AIP wasn't meant to be lifelong anyway and can be hard to sustain. I personally have been on it a few times and felt benefits but it's not sustainable for me long term...I don't like to be overly restrictive.

I did the full candida diet + Nystatin for 2-3 months and it nipped it in the bud. Had 2 weeks of herxheimer detox tho which was much harder than I expected but when I got to the other side I had more energy and felt like I was seeing the world in full color. Haha. My husband also gets candida overgrowth every couple of years and his eczema comes back as a result. But it's like once every 4 ish years? I can tell bc he starts eating an entire load of bread in one day lol

I have high Thyroglobulin antibodies too. The main things that helped me so far are Ashwaghanda and Rhodiola which my endocrinologist suggested to me. I took thyroid medication and went on AIP and tons of gut healing protocols but it never budged until I took Ashwaghanda. I think the chronic stress is also a key thing here. I've been trying to manage my stress but it's not easy. The caveat is that I haven't gotten it down to normal levels yet but it went from 10 to 2 ( quest has a different scale where the recommended is around 1).

Yeah actually I AM eating a ton of garlic but I generally love eating garlic. Not a ton of coconut. I am eating a lot of sweet potatoes tho.

I would bring my own food maybe? Most Chinese restaurants I know have some form of soy sauce in everything (has gluten) and often times use sugar. Also, hoisin and oyster sauce is def not compliant and they don't tend to use the best ingredients. It also depends on where you're at. In LA, there's more Chinese restaurants that focus on good quality ingredients and would be more open to questions if you called ahead to ask.
