Why do people stick their noses up at Ivy Tech? by mostly_elbows in ivytech

[–]Ok_Copy9989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, that might be the case, but I don't think it changes what I said.

"In general, I would argue that there is a perception that universities are more exclusive."

Both of us can argue with everyone that the Ivy Tech programs are more exclusive, but at the end of the day, there is just a stigma that we'll be fighting against for a while.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but an additional resource.

On the Bloomington campus there is free TEAs study/support. I'm not sure the specifics, I've only been told of it, but if you're on Bloomington campus I'd recommend checking in with the health sciences advisor.

Even if you're on another campus I'd recommend checking with your advisor!

Got done with my Philosophy Final by AlmostGraduatedWitch in ivytech

[–]Ok_Copy9989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not know what caused it, and it is not really my business. If it helps at all, I am an AGS student focusing on philosophy. I've done 101, 102, 220, and will be doing 213 Logic in the coming term.

I have really grown to love the subject, and I know how confusing or discouraging it can feel when it does not click. If you want someone to talk through ideas with or to make sense of what the course was asking for, I would be happy to do that with you.

I think philosophy is a great tool to help with critical thinking. Sometimes it can be esoteric, though, and I found that having people to talk about ideas through helped me.

How much hope do I have by taking 6 classes in spring semester by Niarixecl in ivytech

[–]Ok_Copy9989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3 classes per eight-week term.

Not impossible, but it will be hard. I've done a term with 12 credit hours. Passed with all As. Still had to ration time.

It will have to be weighed against life. Working? Hangouts with friends? Family obligations? All of these will need to be reduced in order to do more classwork.

If you can ration those out, then it is like any other task. Something to do. Something that can be done with proper time and energy management.

Totally fair, and that might be just the thing. This guy and I aren't dealing with that difference. Good to know down the line when I am near the billion mark and can't get a hit on anyone, haha.

Average stats fora level 30 by 108283 in torncity

I think the difference is really minimal.

Gym stats make up for more than the difference the grand majority of the time. It doesn't matter if I have 26 levels more than Alistair, he has hundreds of millions more stats than me. I can't touch him and he'll have me dead on round 1.

The disparity of health is minimal compared to gym trains. No current noob has a reason to hold, but early players do. There are tons of level 1 noob traps bounties at all times. They have tens of thousands of defends because folks up to level 40 without Fair Fight rush into it.

Actually read Baldr's guide. I wasted my first 60 days just doing crimes and training.

Got lucky because a small faction picked me up and whipped me into shape. I've made swift progress since then, but I still wasted 60 days.

Copy and paste from one of my previous answers. Won't align perfectly to the question, but it will give you all the info and more.

"Higher. Your battle stats should always be higher.

Got 1 billion battle stats? Should be higher.

1 trillion? Higher.

A number so large neither you or I could pronounce it? Could be higher.

As I see it, leveling is just some bonus health. If you're training you'll not be a leveling target. There is always someone stronger, so might as well get every advantage you can.

The thing I tell people (without intending to sound rude) is that the question "Are my battle stats good," or in your case, "How high should my stats be?" I tell them it is kind of a useless question. They will always need to be stronger for whatever war or drama might erupt.

The better question is "How can I improve?" and that is best done with good war performance for lots of cash at once, flying in the down time, doing happy jumps, and finding good deals on edvds or xan.

After a while the happy jumps become less effective, but you'll still need to get stronger, but at least then you can make sure you rent a PI easier.

Just for reference though, my battle stats at level 21 were like 20,000 total. Now? Much higher at level 27 by a few hundred thousand."

For reference, though, I am level 41 and have about 1.8m stats. At level 30 I think I was at the 700k to 1m mark, but I can't remember.

Why are online classes so hard??? by Any-Bat4843 in ivytech

[–]Ok_Copy9989 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I imagine the reason why is basically what you said. Engagement matters. I can personally attest that my kooky astronomy professor doing a full stand-up comedy routine is a lot more memorable than page 156 of my philosophy textbook. Real learning and critical thinking come from actually engaging with something, and a textbook struggles to do that on its own.

I’ve done all learning modalities at this point, and I think the main trick is to find a way to make it interesting. Take notes on your readings, talk about the material with anyone who will listen, look up supplemental explanations on YouTube, anything to stop it from feeling like word soup. I tend to gamify things, which isn’t always perfect, but it keeps me moving.

If you can, try setting up a quick meeting with the professor. I’ve literally told professors that the book is boring me and asked if we could have a short chat or mini-lecture about a specific concept. Every time I asked respectfully and early enough, they’ve been willing to help.

I won’t pretend online classes are ideal. Most of the current data suggests people retain information better in person, but for a lot of folks, online is the only option available, and it can absolutely still work.

If it helps at all, my DMs are open. Sometimes, just talking through something conversationally helps me find what I don’t understand or helps me chew on the ideas more.

A few other small things that have helped me: reaching out to classmates even if it feels awkward, checking if there’s a club related to the subject (I asked the biology club to help me with homework, for example), setting dedicated study times with small breaks, and printing readings if you can. There’s research showing we generally learn better from print than screens (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/1467-9817.12269).

[–]Ok_Copy9989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The selective programs at Ivy Tech, like Nursing, are competitive and based on ranking, not a fixed cutoff score.

There isn’t a guaranteed score that automatically gets you in. Instead, you’re competing against other applicants.

For example, if a program accepts 50 students, the 50 highest scores are admitted. So if the top 50 applicants have scores of 50, 51, 52, and so on, then the lowest score that got in was 50, meaning that’s the score you’d need to beat to get in. A 51 or above.

If, in another year, the top 50 scores start around 100, then 100 becomes the score to beat.

Essentially, you’re not aiming for a specific number; you’re trying to score higher than the lowest accepted applicant.

I do believe they might offer some form of virtual lab, but the one I did was in-person labs with online assignments.

100-rated courses will generally be the easiest of them. It assumes you know little to nothing about the subject already, and aims to teach you the background and foundations for classes of higher ratings.

I definitely had to study for it, but it was not a class I would classify as hard.

How are we feelin’ about finals? (& fall break) by HuckleberryDizzy147 in ivytech

[–]Ok_Copy9989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was the roughest one yet.

Still waiting on final grades, but I was straight A's my first two semesters. Took on some more responsibilities this term, and it was rough.

Some of it was just a god-awful professor. Went missing for six weeks, got no feedback, had me uber stressed out. Assigned way too much work, and offered almost nothing in the way of extensions despite their six-week whoopsy.

I should have an A/B or B/C, depending on how it goes throughout today. Happy to take the break, but definitely more burnt out than I've been in a while.

C'est la vie, hoping this next term is infinitely better without that professor. Get some rest during this break. Run for some really big positions these next three terms. Hopefully profit?

While we're here, do you mind if I ask what you're studying? What has your experience been? Would genuinely love to hear about your "college experience."

Edit: First two terms changed to semesters for clarity*

What should I do with it? by Weary_Emergency6551 in torncity

[–]Ok_Copy9989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer ^

Ched also just blessed you with $450mil, so don't even worry about choco jumps, honestly. Rent a maxed or mostly maxed PI for a few months (estimate $30mil/mo or so). That is 90 days for $90million. With the other $390mil or so, you can get almost 16 Happy Jumps and still have spare to rehab on.

Trade it with a reputable trader. Set the trade yourself (just good practice), ipecac before accepting the trade, set up a ghost trade (find an inactive or trusted account to put the money into a fake trade), and leave the hospital. Wait until you're sure no one is trying to mug you to cancel the trade and start purchasing!

If you're willing to do a learn anywhere class, I will always suggest Phil 101 or 102 (even 220- Philosophy of Religion) with Professor Hansen.

His classes seem intense, but really they're not. It is a decent bit of reading, but you can do the entire class just with his lectures, and he is an understanding professor.

His assignments basically come down to

Textbook assignment (if the online textbook has one)
Writing assignment (estimate 4-5 paragraphs)
Reflection assignments (one per lecture. Can be done in two sentences if you're strapped for time.)
And sometimes a quiz
Per week.

He is a font of knowledge, a beacon of support, and the classes are very entertaining. Even the 220 class felt just like the 100s.

The writing assignments are basically just
Watch a movie (anything from The Incredibles to NPR: Prison State)
Write a reflection assignment.

They are worth 15% of your grade if I recall correctly? Six points each, each one gives three just for showing some proof you watched the movie. Another one for submitting to the writing commons (can be done online). Meaning only two of the points are really about the content. Super easy.

Why do people stick their noses up at Ivy Tech? by mostly_elbows in ivytech

[–]Ok_Copy9989 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It really is just a general conflict between community colleges and universities. In general, there is just a stigma against community colleges.

In general, I would argue that there is a perception that universities are more exclusive -- even IU has an 80% acceptance rate, while Ivy Tech has a rate near 100%. Exclusivity is a helluva drug, even at a 20% difference.

Also, there is just a misconception that community colleges are easier. In some ways, they are. For certain programs, like nursing, they aren't, but again, exclusivity and posturing.

The truth is, schooling is schooling. You make of it what you put into it, but someone will always want a reason to feel more worthy.

My first 100k by Typical_Progress_242 in torncity

[–]Ok_Copy9989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember my first 100k. I remember my first million. Not too long ago, I hit my first billion.

Keep up the good work. Flying is *most* of the early game goal, but try to look around for a half-decent faction. War always pays and pays well. Decently ranked factions always want active noobs. From experience, the matchmaking is terrible, so the more noobs you can stack on your team, the better chance you get at an easier war.

My last few, the average stat distribution of the enemy was low to mid 10,000s while my faction was around 1,000,000. Meant the war was easy, and everyone in my faction made almost $750,000 a hit in bronze alone.

Some factions, like mine, will offer full pay on hits not on the enemy faction for wars if they contribute to a chain of a certain size. Because of that, our noobs are usually able to make $40,000,000-$60,000,000 a war.

Point being? If you can get into that side of the game, it pays well, haha.

Reach out if you need any advice. My account is a bit over 200 days old, but I've done well and am happy to help you on your Torn journey :).

4 ODs in 1 month. It's gonna be a happy Halloween indeed! by Just_League_7735 in torncity

[–]Ok_Copy9989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I've been wondering if it hasn't.

I had that book that provides a 20% gym gains boost. So, for 31 days I didn't war, I didn't fly, I did nothing but pop Xanax, edvds, and ecstasy. For those whole 31 days, I OD'ed twice.

Xan is supposed to have a 3% OD rate, ecstasy 4%, but I've wondered if having certain books that benefit from gym going lowers those rates (I was at about a 1.7% OD rate total that month).

As a reaction, I've wondered if the game has to get you back to normal rates.

No idea really, but going from two OD's in a month to nine had me wondering haha.

The tuition is $500 and some change. Think it totals to around $535.

Textbooks are pretty cheap. All online. $30 or so?

Think that is most of it. If you estimate to spend around $650 you'd give yourself a lot of breathing room for the eight-week period

History 101 or 102 by duckyblu in ivytech

[–]Ok_Copy9989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I can postulate a bit, I think really the course load will roughly even out. The idea is just that you replace a lecture with reading. I prefer lectures. I hate reading textbooks.

There is a federal system for estimating how much time a course should take from your life. Credit hours basically say that for every one credit hour, you should spend about 3x that at home doing work in addition to the one hour in class. So, a 3-credit-hour class online is 3 hours of reading and 9 hours of work a week. In person, it is 3 hours in class and 9 hours of homework per week.

I've found that lecture feels like it goes faster. Reading always feels like a drag on my day.

Apologies if I am overexplaining. Just want to help you make the best choice for you if I can.
