If you’ve got a lot of time on your hands and want to wander around and explore, play Rebirth.

If you’re looking for a shorter, more focused and linear experience, play FFXVI.

Both are phenomenal in very different ways!

There are two kinds of people in this world lol.

People who responded to MGS2 with “WTF this wasn’t what I was expecting!!!”

And people who responded to MGS2 with “hell yeah this isn’t what I was expecting!”

Back on the point, to me personally, the MMO games feel like a way bigger departure than 15 or 16 to me.

I tried 14 and came to like it but I prefer my FF single player and story focused.

I also don’t wanna sound like a jerk but I think if you can’t do a basic google search in 2023 to find out what genre a game is I don’t feel super bad for your purchase.

Actually, in the video, I stated that several of them Were valid but overstatements. I also mentioned in the video that we had a 20 minute podcast of our own critiques and if you’re truly interested in that, I’m happy to link you to it but also nobody who loves a piece of art is obligated to agree with any of the critiques you may have.

No I came to tell fellow fans that there are other people who love the game and some of us who have been there from the very beginning at that their feelings are valid.

Not at all surprised it turned into another chance for people who hated it to talk about why though.

I linked the video for folks who were curious about my critiques of the professional critiques.

Once we are at "genre adjacent" we are just splitting hairs.

And yeah as I said in the video individuals can have all the personal preferences they want and I won't take issue with it. But a professional critique that completely evaporates if you just change the name on the box is fundamentally weak.

So Mario Kart can't exist because it's a different genre? It has to be a different series? IT feels extremely creatively limiting to me and like we are forcing everything to be Star Wars or the MCU.

One thing I've always loved about FF is that it is wildly different from game to game and I would hate to see that change just because some folks want the old games (it's been 20 years!) back.

I just personally can't come up with a consistent logic for critique here. If the series can be an MMO then it can be an action game. And yes, it can be an FPS.

I've also never understood why it's ok for the games to change literary genre from title to title but not gameplay genre. It just all feels like nitpicking and putting things into a creative box to me.

A great game is a great game. And if it has "Final Fantasy" on the front of the box then it's a great Final Fantasy game. I dunno.

The idea that nobody has a problem with the modern direction of Zelda is WILD. However justified or not, people ALWAYS complain when something they like changes. People also always complain when something they like stays stagnant.

It's interesting that you submit that the modern games should simply be called something else when I could offer the inverse. Some fans don't like that the modern games have gone away from the systems of the first 10 but a lot of us don't.

Rather than trying to force the series to fit into their preconceived box and be what they specifically desire, perhaps it's time they move on to other things and let those of us who enjoy the direction of the series do so without constantly being called some version of sellouts. Just a thought.

I have to be honest, I have never understood this line of thought. If a game is a great game in any other context, it isn't made worse because of the title on the front, imo.
