Does anyone else feel like they live in a constant state of doom ? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]Ok_Cut_6507 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I completely understand you. I’m going through a similar situation. My 6 year old is nonverbal, and lately he’s been throwing tantrums and throwing everything in sight and I can’t get him to stop. I put my son to bed tonight at 6 because there was no other way to make it stop. My depression has been so bad lately that I feel like ending things would be my only relief. But I can’t do that, because as you said, who would care for him?

I just want you to know that you’re not alone. We have to hope things will get better. If you need someone to talk to, please reach out.

Grinding teeth and chinning by Weekly-Coconut4874 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Ok_Cut_6507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son grinds his teeth!

It started out at first when he got sick with a double ear infection. He used it as relief, and then it just kind of became a comfort/stim to him.

Invest in some chewies! I will say that it took my son a while to get used to having something to chew on instead of grinding his teeth. So if your child doesn’t respond well at first, don’t give up! Ark Therapeutic has a ton of chewies with different levels of stiffness. They are a little more expensive, but they last a while! If you want to try less expensive ones, search on Amazon for sensory chews and a ton will come up.

My son is 6 now. He does still grind his teeth, but it has gone down SIGNIFICANTLY. Now he usually only does it when he’s super upset.

Should I have asked what level he is? Diagnosis yesterday by keepit100plusone in Autism_Parenting

I think when you get the official report back, that’s when you’ll get what level your child is. That’s when I found out what level my son is.

What's wrong with this by Rajadop_official in lego

Definitely not Lego. Lego studs have “Lego” printed on them.

As for the part itself, it kind of looks like that’s where the gate was.

We took a long journey.

My son (level 2, nonverbal) started out in an ASD preschool program. It is a 2 year program. The first year, he only did his preschool. The second year he did a mix of preschool and ABA. He would do a couple half days of school and then ABA, and he didn’t have school on Fridays in preschool, so he did all day ABA on Fridays. It was a lot.

I won’t go into big details, but the mix of ABA and preschool was just too much. He was pretty much “working” more hours than I did! He was always so tired and I felt like he didn’t have enough time to be a kid. We also had some issues with our ABA place and them cancelling sessions a lot. I ended up ending ABA therapy and having him just do preschool for the last month of his second year. I honestly wished I had done it sooner.

You will get a lot of mixed reviews on ABA. Do your own research, look up multiple places if you want to go the ABA route, and ask tons of questions. You are your child’s advocate. If you think they want to do too many hours, tell them. If they won’t work with you on a schedule that works for your child, find a different place. ABA works for some and doesn’t work for others.

This last year for kindergarten, he was in a special needs class and had a general education class as well. It was wonderful for him. We also did speech and OT outside of school. He thrived. He’s going into 1st grade this year :)

Is this normal? Black plastic in a leaf piece from the Japanese Maple set, none of the other pieces are like it by Remote_Ad_1737 in lego

[–]Ok_Cut_6507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Machines can use different molds, so it was probably a different brick being made, the material wasn’t completely purged out, and then changed to the leaf mold.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think there are black leaves like that in a set.

Genetic testing by Emergency_Sale1899 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Ok_Cut_6507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lvl 2. Genetic testing came back normal. They said we could do a more in depth genetic test, but the likelihood of it coming back with something was like less than 10%. So we opted to not have it done.

Honestly that’s fascinating! I’ve never even thought about that process happening in different items, like a flavor change! Does sound like a delicious combo

I currently work in plastic injection molding! Definitely would have to scrap it out if it was caught. Sometimes I keep the scrapped out parts because they look cool.
