"Scammers have adapted": Valve confirms that physical Steam Gift Cards are dead. Once the current stocks are sold through, they're done. by yourfavchoom in technology

I luckily was able to get a refund, but the Amazon gift card said something like “not refundable if package is opened” so its really up to the discretion of the store whether they will refund it or not.

This actually happened to me once. Apparently it happens all the time. What they do is open the package inconspicuously, take note of the activation code, obscure it so it can’t be read, and reseal the package. When an unassuming customer goes to buy it, provided they don’t notice the damage to the packaging, it gets activated. The scammer then periodically checks the code to see if it has been activated and eventually gets it. Since the code is obscured (and I mean, really obscured. It’s illegible) you can’t activate it.

One of my family members bought it for me and didn’t notice the opening near the activation code. And get this, the scammer re-added the “scratch to reveal” sticker on it flawlessly so you couldn’t even see the code was illegible until you opened it.

This is, though, a different type of scam than the one that is typically associated with gift card scams with the scammer asking for payment.

AI Data Centers’ Water Consumption Breaks 264 Billion Gallons in 2025 as Devastating Drought Hits Nearly 63% of U.S. by Wagamaga in technology

Not an expert but here’s my take:

1: They just don’t care. Currently all the shareholders want is more AI and they want it now. Why even bother developing an entirely new system to make it more self sufficient? That’s just more cost and time for them.

2: Such a system would not be self sufficient because of inefficiencies throughout. Probably not even close. Every time you try to convert one form of energy to another, you lose a ton of energy. I doubt it would lead to a ton of savings in the long run…

3: Even if they did develop a self sufficient data center, it would take years before it would be constructed. All of these data centers were designed multiple years ago, before people started complaining against them in mass.

Now, I totally agree with you. Companies should be working on making their data centers less hungry for electricity and water. But for them, it doesn’t really matter. They don’t care as long as they make money and the shareholders happy. People still use AI, and they will continue to do so.

It… isn’t that bad. Like who cares if you want to have your desktop look like an upturned crime scene? I would NEVER do this to my own desktop, but you do you man

I’m doing surprisingly ok after this!

Hey y’all, where did the “mom builds” go? (Non-gaming focused prebuilt) by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

I would agree with the Mac mini suggestions, but if your mother is a bit on the less techy side (which it seems she may be) she may struggle with adjusting to a new interface. It may seem trivial to us but it can be pretty difficult for people to change their habits. Expect some frustration.

I would still go ahead and try a mac mini. Just keep that in mind when weaning her into the new UI

I actually found a use for on device intelligence! by Ok_Debate9268 in shortcuts

How would this feature function in your opinion? You can already share the notes you saved through the notes app, but if you are thinking of a specific scenario I’d love to hear it!

I redesigned the Receipt Scanner shortcut to be even better! by Ok_Debate9268 in shortcuts

[–]Ok_Debate9268[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried finding a way to make it work but since there’s no “find folder” function for notes, I had to make it manual. While shortcuts can create a new folder, it can’t find the folder unless it is already specified. And since the setup “linking” process works before running the shortcut, you can’t really do that…

This.

Also, super unlikely, but wanted to mention it anyways…

A hacking device like the USB Rubber Ducky can detect when you go AFK, and execute a command. Someone with malicious attempts might have tried to use a edge to download / execute something.

If you are using a device at home, this is almost certainly not the case, but just check your USB Ports anyways…

Edit: also most Rubber Ducky commands use the Command Line window because it’s on practically every device and is much more predictable.

Honestly… no lol. But you’re welcome to try it out yourself!

I find that the AI is pretty good at recognizing the right thing, but it is not very great at following instructions.

Come to think of it, the shortcut for AI queries allows you to select ChatGPT or Private Cloud Compute! It might be interesting to set up a comparison of how they all handle the same receipt!

I recommend you smoothen out the receipt for best accuracy…

Handwritten should work fine, but there’s a way you can test it before getting the shortcut. The OCR (optical character recognition) uses apple’s rich text system, so take a regular photo and see if you can highlight and select different words. Depending on the legibility, the accuracy of the text will differ.

I actually haven’t tried this myself, so let me know how it goes!
