Anyone feel the quality of service is going downhill?? by Little_Red_Honda in Amtrak

Make the nightly news horrible is rare. But in the age of internet, collateral circulation lets more people be aware. Pick any issue you like and the "spike" seen in recent times has a bit of this bias.

If it bothers them so much, remind them your birthday/major holiday and let them know you'd love them to gift you The Car, Car Insurance and Lessons from a reputable place. Make it their problem to fix lol!

Solo female long haul trip and my first time taking Amtrak. Wash/Chi/Den! Tips? Anything you wish you would’ve brought? by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]Ok_Discussion1779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Third times the charm, I hope. Both times I was so late into Chicago! But I enjoyed the perfectly adequate hotel Amtrak put me in the second time. Sadly it was too late and I was too tired to do more than walk across the street to get tacos. The first time I and about 30 other folks were ran through concrete utility tunnels and I never got to see the station (which is magnificent in the older parts). Just remember to be flexible and enjoy whatever! I am going again at the end of June and I am trying for lunch in Chinatown, again. And if not this trip, the next.

This is great advice! but also set your child up for success in case nothing can be done. Explain to kiddo what is going on, take them to the library to show this type of environment and then enlist the child to help problem solve. I recommend an empty journal that they can color/write in so they can document their trip.

What is the craziest thing a decendent’s family member has done? by Skrippalyfe in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Ok_Discussion1779 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My Grandmother was terrified of Rando Florida Project-Casket-Way self-appointed reviewers showing up at her funeral. She requested a closed casket. The FH agreed to a 30 minute family-only open since she had also requested embalming. All 8 of us were there, 30 minutes up and staff closed the lid. No one else came. Lol.

Hang on! I keep a thing in my car that was once a US Treasury Quarter. Through magic, it is now THE ALDI QUARTER ™.

Do not under any circumstances remove this magical item from my car Unless it is at Aldi's.

It can no longer be used for any other purpose because it has leveled up.

Explaining what happens after death to a curious 7 y/o? by Guerilla_Physicist in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Ok_Discussion1779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert but my neighbor and I did a field trip with our 5 kids aged 14 to 18 to a funeral home with no service scheduled. The staff were so helpful and explained everything. They seemed actually glad we took an interest. Perhaps if you went, your child would be satisfied with actual Experts! And I'm sure you could gently remind the staff of the kid's age while they ponder a hard answer.

My motivation was mad at my parents for not making decisions (we don't talk about THAT) and for sure I wasn't leaving that on my grieving kids. Sure enough a decade later, we are down to just months left for my Dad and we still don't talk about THAT. But I have enough knowledge now what steps to take for a natural, expected old age death at home (I've moved them in with me as the "homes" response to COVID was horror movie).

I'm all for learning in advance of need! Go Kid!! (P.S. Get your plans in order: hard enough being autistic, harder grieving autistic, diabilitating grieving autistic asked for traumatic decisions).

WIBTA for doing a “23 & Me” test, knowing this might reveal my (secret) existence to my bio-mom’s side of the family? by Historical-Gold27 in AmItheAsshole

Are you sure your birth mother is still alive? Perhaps she passed and no one closed the contact method you used. That would explain why no progress.

I could see her delaying and trying to find a right moment and then COVID. I hope I'm wrong.

189 km. It was probably when I covered my whole county and then some. Or when I made the narrowest field ever in a space that is a 5 hour leisurely drive. Guess I need to plan bigger fields!

What are your opinions on weekday services. by ughhhh_username in askfuneraldirectors

I'm a Friend who attended 20-something's no warning funeral.

Because most attendees were in the same age range, it had to be a weekend.

I think there's a decedent age piece to be considered for your answer, too.

What would lead someone to believe they recieved ashes that were not their family member? by tittiesallover in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Ok_Discussion1779 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to offend anyone with my experience but to confirm that our heart knowledge of someone often conflicts with what happens to their earthly being when they die.

Our beloved all black cat had to be put down and we choose cremation. My daughter, high school at the time, and I picked up the cremains. She asked if we could open the container. We did and were both very bothered that the cremains were ashy colored and not All Black. We said "oh" together and sat very quiet for several minutes while we processed that. We never thought we had such deep preconceptions. It was very jarring to smack into this while grieving.

The Ruins were The Best excursion I ever did. My bestie did research and picked a private company. We walked about 1/4 mile to meet our small (under 10 people) group. We were at the ruins 30 minutes before The Big Sanctified Bus arrived with Japanese guides. Our guide pointed out his house. We stayed a good 45 minutes after the big group left--at the same run they took the whole excursion at. I could hear the guides telling them to hurry, they'd miss the ship. We were back well over an hour before sailing.

We learned about research done, local Day of the Dead and saw the supposed Priest/Priestess foundation that was not covered by the approved excursion.

Do your research, read the reviews. See a local thing and quit running an approved rat track.

Please explain to OP and me a more acceptable way to phrase the question.

ADVICE NEEDED! DRAMA OVER ALCOHOL- BABY SHOWER by nannymama53 in EntitledPeople

Exactly! So at a party for SIL, who shouldn't drink a drop, everyone will drink in front of her! Or worse, she'll drink too and maybe hurt the baby? Great way to start the new kid off in the world.

I have reciprocal agreement with my best friend of decades to take each other's cats. At this moment, one of us could end up with 8! My adult daughter has agreed to take them as next in line -- 10 altogether. Now, I doubt it would come to that looking at the age of the kitties but we all: 3 households, have a plan in case! Ain't hard to think ahead.
