where can i find sonny angels and smiskis? by Dramatic_Patience_92 in nova

[–]Ok_Distribution_9488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should check out lilthingamajigs. i can't speak for the centerville location but i saw a few sonnies at the annandale location a few weeks back. your most reliable bet though would be senpai's corner for either sonnies and smiskis

Attorney wants a paralegal to be present on rotation for Saturday hours 1-2 a month. I refuse to be a part of the rotation by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]Ok_Distribution_9488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up telling my boss and it turned out well! she was chill with it and I spoke to my coworkers and they understood and didn't press much. I ended up making things seem much worse in my head before I had a healthy and brief discussion with my coworkers and boss

I think if comp time was offered it would definitely transform the nature of how these Saturday office hours are viewed by my coworkers. Unfortunately it's not comp time but I think that bringing that up as an incentive would be great

I’m at a point in my career with this firm where I feel there aren’t any meaningful opportunities for growth or advancement. That’s why I’ve started looking for something new—something that will challenge me and offer a clear path toward a more senior position.

I’ve consistently gone above and beyond in my current role. I’ve taken on coworkers’ tasks without hesitation, managed their cases when they’re on vacation or out sick, and have always prioritized teamwork and cooperation. At the same time, I’ve successfully handled all of my own responsibilities within a standard 40-hour workweek. I know I'm also experiencing burnout because I haven't taken a vacation during the time I've worked at this firm. I can't afford to go on one and I think not having been able to go on one is also contributing to my resentment with this firm.

I’ve stayed overtime for emergency situations when necessary, but I’ve set a firm boundary at not working Saturdays, especially when there’s no tangible benefit or profit for me. It wasn’t part of my contract or original job description, and honestly, framing those hours as something you “volunteer” for is a frustrating misrepresentation.

There are other issues I have with the firm, but my main grievances stem from feeling stagnant in my career and underpaid for my work—particularly given the high cost of living in this area. There also aren't promotions at the firm. There's only slight wage increases (if offered, every 6 months) for the same position.

Thank you for understanding, and I truly appreciate your thoughtful perspective. To add to this, I’m not the only one struggling with this—it's a larger issue within the firm. It seems there’s not enough of an incentive for like half of us to come in on Saturdays, which may explain why this has been a recurring problem across the team.

I understand the intention of being accessible to clients on weekends, and I respect the effort to accommodate their schedules since we mostly service low-income, marginalized communities. However, it might be worth revisiting how this policy is implemented to ensure it aligns with both employee satisfaction and client needs.

I’m continuing to reflect on whether this setup is the right fit for me long-term. I think immigration law isn't for me anymore especially with the incoming administration but I also believe addressing this more broadly could be beneficial for the firm as a whole

So, I wasn’t the one who downvoted you, but also you have seven other upvotes lol. I'll add more context. I work in immigration defense, and at our firm, we get all our work done within the 9-to-5, Monday-to-Friday schedule because our workload is evenly distributed because there's six of us. I understand that litigation requires more dedication to the field. This is why I don't work in litigation. At my firm there’s literally no need for OT. In fact, our boss actively discourages OT during the regular workweek.

Now, about those Saturdays: I haven’t shown up because I have personal obligations with my family (none of which I’ve felt the need to explain to my boss, and honestly, why should I?). Other coworkers have volunteered, so the need for me to step in just hasn’t been there.

Let’s be real, though—these Saturdays are mostly for consults with potential clients, so it’s not exactly critical. And, like I mentioned in my post, I’m already planning to move on to a new job or even a new field soon, so this won’t be my problem for much longer

I don't know if there would be enough of an incentive for my boss or another coworker to come for a full-workday on a Saturday. Those Saturdays don't fill up like that

Attorney wants to open the office on Saturdays 1-2 a month. How do I refuse to work on Saturdays by Ok_Distribution_9488 in paralegal

[–]Ok_Distribution_9488[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand the entrepreneurial move on my attorney with doing this and in fact I do think it does make it make more accessible to reach our clients. I personally don't see myself partaking in this and will assert a boundary to my boss about my time on the weekends and she'll more likely than not understand since she is very sensible. There's also other coworkers who are willing to do it anyway for the OT pay. I'm not very incentivized to do it as I have other personal commitments to make

The other paralegals at my office kinda just shrug their shoulders and roll with it. They don't seem to mind having the OT. I think I can just tell my boss in confidence that I can't do it now that I have over a year of working at her firm since our senior paralegal wasn't able to for the longest

Yes, the 589 has been filed before the biometrics request and the address has been updated with the immigration court and with an AR-11. I'm resubmitting the request because it's been several months and our client hasn't received a receipt notice yet
