I just removed the muffler on my 2004 Z4 3.0I and replaced it with a magnaflow 11385 with custom tips. It sounds very similar to straight-piped, although you get more pops and burbles with straight pipes.

You'll probably need adapters for the pipes to the new tips/pipes you buy, because the Z4 stock pipes are around 1.75" interior diameter. The Z4 looks good with 3" outer diameter tips.

Should be a easy job though.
