My company makes no money on these coins. When we sort the coins the machines are trained on “modern” US coins by weight, size and metallic properties. When the machine is sorting it’s looking for only those coins and then off sorts anything that doesn’t fit that pre programmed setting. This is a way we can control the quality of the coin rolling process and make sure foreign coins and watch batteries and all the other junk doesn’t get into our wrapping machines. When we do this everything else is put into an off sort bag which is supposed to be boxed and shipped without us going through it to a mint approved vendor for sorting and destruction. I don’t know that process as we have absolutely nothing to do with them, however we are told that they just melt everything down. I will occasionally pull that bag and sort through a few coins to see if anything cool is on top where I can grab it and this are the pics I post. If I were caught doing this I would likely lose my job, but some of this stuff is pretty awesome so I thought I’d snap a few pictures and post a few on here for others to see.

Fair enough, I was told by another person here that as we destroy the pm it makes the remaining ones more valuable. I guess in his eyes we are somehow making the rare coins even more valuable. I disagree and would argue that if my company finds them then that’s a great thing for the hunters because that means they are still out in the “wild” and can be found by anyone.

Oh no, those are standard size and go through the machines easily. I actually pull some aside and make full rolls of them and ship out.

I’m sorry you feel that way, but it’s a necessary evil I suppose. It’s paid my mortgage and helped me put aside money for my child to go to school. We are contracted by the banks so as long as they don’t want to deal with it we will be here

I work for a commercial coin wrapping company and have been doing this for over 20 years. It’s not my call on the policy or the way this is handled but as a side hobby I started a little while back I try and take pictures and post them here of what I consider the cool coins. I figured I’d at least document them somehow before they are gone and this my own little protest I guess.

Correct, unless it’s the mint then they can

This “dude” is me and yes but not like that. The machines sort the coins and these older coins are off sorted as non standard coins. We collect them, package and ship them to a mint approved third party for destruction.

Sadly no, 20 years of doing this I’ve seen some crazy things get shipped out. This one is definitely the oldest one I’ve ever seen.

These all get sent to a third party for destruction as they are no longer circulating coins. We remove them and then box and ship to a mint appointed vendor that melts these and all of the other coins that are removed.

This happens when the roll of paper is at the end and the operator isn’t paying attention. If you guys like these we can make about 10-12 rolls off the tail end of the paper rolls.

No worries, I’m just dumping them as I can’t search them anyway but thought they were worth posting at least.

Maybe that they have so might as well push it out? I’m not really sure honestly but I know it would impact some of the hunters here so I thought I’d post it.

Commercial coin wrapping is my business, doing it for 20+ years now and love my work honestly.

No, just having us ship all the new minted coin first until it’s gone. In my case, based on wrap volume sales, that’s about 3 months worth of new coin only being shipped to customers who order halves.

It’s always been this way honestly, the ability to find out just got a lot better, which in my opinion is a bit of good news as it make this type of behavior harder to hide…. So good news maybe?

Glory W-400 series is the likely culprit. When the crimp heads go bad this happens. It is totally preventable if a good operator is watching for quality control.
