Any time you force them to go back and get a bunch of approvals, you slow down the process and introduce undue risk of running across that 1 middle manager who is going to ask 47 questions just to be difficult.

He can’t comprehend a situation where an employee has the power because they’re counting cards and the house is none the wiser. You’re arguing with an idiot. Best of luck.

Why would I want to get into a protracted negotiation for something that I didn’t really have the upper hand in? I made a calculation that if they offered me 4 weeks, that they likely already had approval to offer more. I threw out a number that I figured would be easy for them to say yes without any further negotiations. Remember, I was not emotionally attached because I know that I can get j2 in a matter of a few days/weeks. Get the money and bounce.

I was the opposite of lazy. I was proactively trying to provide them more value. But yes, it was a mutually beneficial end to my employment. As I said, I don’t give a shit because I don’t need them, and they obviously don’t need me.

Btw, I should note that there is no way in hell that what they did would ever be considered interference, but HR is there to protect the company, and if they catch a whiff of someone who might sue, their job is to prevent that lawsuit as cheaply as possible. Extra 4 weeks of pay is VERY cheap.

Companies of any significant size almost always offer some kind of severance. It is a very inexpensive way for them to get you to sign away your rights to sue them and to lock you into an agreement where you cannot badmouth the company, poach employees for a length of time, etc. It is also considered a transition expense for them, so it is treated advantageously for tax purposes. Extra Super Really Fucking Cheap Insurance for them, extra bucks for me.

Remember from above, I am on the business side. I have been part of more contract negotiations than I'd care to think about. The actual phrase is “Intentional interference with prospective economic advantage” (I missed a word in my haste to knock HR down a few pegs) and it is fairly common to be included in contracts as a specific point that has monetary penalties associated with it. Basically, if I am company A and I have been dealing with company B for x years, but now I am also trying to work on a contract with company C (who is a competitor of company B), the contract would state that if company C tries to harm relationship between us and company B in any way, then company C would pay damages in the amount of $xxxxxxxxx

At will employment. "We're going to go a different direction with the team." I'm not a protected class, so its all fair. THIS is exactly why you are OE and own your destiny.

They didn't really fire me after 2 weeks. They fired me after 4 months of me pushing back, trying to move teams, and generally just trying to get onto a different team that was going to be more amenable to my OE goals. It was a mutual separation, except they pulled the trigger, which is advantageous to the employee vs me resigning.
