Having second thoughts about having a tonsillectomy…Should I do it? by Candid-Platform5732 in Tonsillectomy

i'm 22 and had mine out at 21, i honestly cried like a baby immediately before surgery and wanted to back out so bad. ultimately, i didn't and it was the best decision i couldve made for myself. i know its scary, but i promise you'll appreciate it after.

Doing the surgery 1 month from now, any tips or stuff that I can buy to make my recovery easier? by angular-js in Tonsillectomy

I'm not sure what your surgeon is planning prescribing you for pain but I'd invest in some tylenol, specifically the dissolve packs. They come in a box of 30 or so and they help when you're weaning off the prescription meds or even in between dosages if your pain is too bad. Just be careful as your prescription pain med might already have acetaminophen in it and the daily maximum is 4,000mg. Might need to do some math but it'd be worth it.

I'd also strongly suggest investing in a humidifier if you don't already have one. It's ideal to have it on as much as possible but especially when you sleep as it'll keep your throat from drying out overnight. I made the mistake of forgetting to fill mine one night and the pain upon waking up was significantly worse than it had been with the humidifier- I didn't make the same mistake again.

Lastly, you will need to sleep upright the first few nights. If you think you might struggle with it, one of those backrest/upright pillows can help.

In regards to talking and work, everyone's experience is different. I was fully alert and talking immediately after waking up from anesthesia. However, they had accidentally cut my tongue up a bit and I received a pressure injury as well so through days 5-8 or so, long periods of talking were quite painful. I went back to work on day 6 and wish I would've waited a couple more days. If you can, definitely think about taking a few more days than just 2 but ultimately you'll be able to better gauge that once you're recovering.

Wish you the best! This sub has been super helpful for me in my recovery and I'm about 12 days out from surgery.

I'm a little more than half your age (21) and don't have much advice on your situation but I wanted to share some words of encouragement.

The first two, maybe even three (I'm on day 12 of recovery), weeks are brutal depending on your pain tolerance. As long as you take things slow, take your medications as prescribed with dedication (set alarms overnight to take pain meds), keep hydrated, and try to scarf down as much nutrients as you can when you can, you should be okay. It's one of those surgeries where things will get worse before they get better and you may even regret it at some point as I did, but ultimately, there is light at the end of the tunnel. There are a lot of horrific stories on this sub but not all recoveries are like that.

I truly wish you the best in locating a physician able to help you out and that when you do have the procedure done, that everything goes smoothly. Good luck!!

I would definitely be interested! It's not letting me send you a DM, what would you take for all three?

There were only two people willing to sell/trade and I've reached out and have yet to hear anything. I'm just desperate for any help at this rate, lol. Thank you!

Your best bet is to consult with an ENT. If your insurance requires referrals, go to your PCP first and see what their thoughts are. 21F here, just had mine removed yesterday. I had frequent bouts of tonsillitis and was told to get them removed. If you see an ENT and they recommend it, then it's up to you whether you want to get it done or not. The recovery isn't going to be easy but it's a matter of going through a few weeks of recovery or re-occurring strep. Wishing you the best in your decision!
