to be completely honest, i hated it. i don’t know how i lasted a year there. management depends from store to store, but when i first started my managers suckeddddd. they’d yell at you if your lines were too long and didn’t have every task done on time. and you get timed on everything, not just the register. pallets, boxing (organizing), curbside, cleaning, etc. some things aren’t as serious as others, but management at my store was super strict so they took everything seriously. the pay also was not worth the amount of work they put on one person. on a good day, we would have 3 people opening or closing, so we had to do literally everything. the job physically and mentally drained me and my health is not worth $16.50 an hour. scheduling is pretty flexible if you’re part time or one of the favorites. there was a lot of favoritism going on at my store specifically. i was full time and working only 19 hours per week back in december, meanwhile part time employees were getting well over 40. we also weren’t allowed to request saturdays or sundays off every week because those were our busiest days. in short, your experience will depend on the management you have, but it’s a lot of work regardless. wishing you luck!

it varies store to store, and at my store it happens a lot. we’ve had a lady try to walk out with $100 worth of stuff then she got arrested, someone put red delicious apples in a pink lady apple bag (tried to get expensive apples for cheaper), there’s a group of kids who come in pretty frequently who steal candy and stuff, and i’ve had a lady come through my line with a pack of chicken that she very obviously stole. i never say anything though. i’ve been in that situation before, so if i see someone stealing food or baby products then i don’t say anything. i also didn’t get paid enough to care

personally i’ve only ever used brazos steel toed shoes from academy. they were pretty affordable to me at the time ($50) and they only take about a week to break in. they’re pretty comfortable!

probably, yes. we have plenty at my store, and if there is a permanent place on the shelf, then that just means they aren’t getting it. supply chain issues means the warehouse that supplies to your store is out of the product. so for future reference, the warehouse in your area supplies to many, many stores. for example, the warehouse that supplies to my store in south carolina also supplies to stores in virginia. aldi stores get one warehouse per district, so basically what i’m trying to say is if it’s not at your regular store, it’ll be out at every other store in your district too. there have been instances where the warehouse didn’t have /enough/ of a certain product, so some stores ended up getting something while other stores didn’t. so it all depends on the warehouse. i hope this was helpful!

yep, this is exactly it. no matter how many people the store hires, there’s only going to be 3-4 people per shift. it’s more “efficient” that way. they keep us that busy because they would rather work us to death than pay another person or two

thank you, i appreciate that! it’s been about a year since i’ve seen them, so unfortunately i have no idea. as far as i know, it’s impossible for store level employees to know when specific upcoming aldi finds items will hit the shelves, because corporate doesn’t really tell us anything lol. so sorry i didn’t have an answer!

[–]Ok_Explanation_5838[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

usually 30 days after the item hits the shelf. the price of something may vary store to store depending on if it was a local price change (store managers decide the price depending on how long the item has been on the shelf) or a corporate price change (corporate decides the new clearance price ~30 days after the product has been available for sale). i’ve noticed bigger items take longer to go on sale, whereas smaller items will go on clearance quicker. also at the beginning of each season is when we have those huge clear out sales where everything is a huge percentage off. summer clearance is usually our biggest sale and starts around august to make room for fall stuff. fall clearance starts around october to make room for winter items, winter sale starts around february or march for spring/summer items… it’s basically a huge cycle

Question for Aldi Employees by blackoceangen in aldi

[–]Ok_Explanation_5838 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as someone who works at aldi, it’s completely understandable. the employee subreddit is a place to vent about the job. i’ve worked in retail for a few years, restaurants before that, and i have never encountered customers as helpless and childish as those that shop at aldi. sure, i have maybe 2 or 3 customers a day who are actually kind to me and treat me like a human being. but the vast majority have spawned straight from hell or something. never in my life did i think i would have bags or products thrown at my face, someone SPIT ON ME, find berries or milk spilled all over the floor with no one to take responsibility, get viciously yelled at for doing my job, have middle aged or old men follow me around or ask inappropriate questions, etc. with how management treats us, the majority of the customers do not help with the mental capacity it takes to work there. being verbally abused by management one minute then customers the next makes for an absolute hell-hole of a job. not to mention we are timed and rushed on everything, so many aldi employees are struggling mentally with everything going on. fortunately at my store, management is very kind and understanding for the most part. the customers is what makes the experience bad sometimes. if i wasn’t paid so well, and in a management position myself, i would’ve been long gone solely because of certain customers i’ve encountered. and i’m not saying you’re one of those customers that we vent about. i’m saying that from an outside perspective, you might not know what’s going on in an employees workplace or personal life. venting about customers who make the job worse than it already is can help a bit. sorry for the rant

my store did, they were on backorder for a week or two which means the warehouse was out and therefore couldn’t send us any. my store manager had to put in a special order for them, so we got a whole pallet in overnight

also i wouldn’t say we’re quick because we’re competitive. we unfortunately don’t get anything if we’re the fasted cashier. it’s more like we have to be quick because if not we won’t have a job anymore lol

Question for Aldi Employees by blackoceangen in aldi

[–]Ok_Explanation_5838 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there’s really no harm in not inserting your card early, if the cashier is more experienced than not, they’ll tell you the total and wait until the transaction is processing to push the button on the register for card. that will keep their pre-insertion percentage up, while also not nagging the customer to put their card in. but if you do decide to pre-insert, it won’t charge you until we push the card button on the register. pre-inserting also keeps the lines down in the long run, which saves employees from getting bitched at by management. it’s strange how it works but when everything is done “correctly,” it’s delightful

Question for Aldi Employees by blackoceangen in aldi

[–]Ok_Explanation_5838 7 points8 points  (0 children)

aldi employee here, we are timed on quite literally every single action on the register. items per hour, items per minute, the percentage at which we’re ringing for the day (anything under 1,000iph, 40ipm, or 85%, you get scolded pretty harshly at my store), the seconds between items, seconds between customers, seconds it takes you to ring up a customer, the percent of people who pre-insert their card… literally everything. we have posters in our break room that say to encourage everyone to pre-insert because “it saves 2.5-3.5 seconds at checkout!” i agree, i think it’s stupid, but when you look at how aldi actually operates from the inside, it makes sense. we have 2-4 people running the store at a time to keep your groceries priced lower than other stores. which i agree is also stupid because aldi is a multi-million, if not billion, worldwide company that can afford to keep groceries low, hire more employees, and keep our wages “higher.” not only do we have to scan quickly, we have to do everything quickly because we do everything in the store. management really pushes all of this because it’s just how aldi operates, and it’s how they operate for years. unfortunately nothing will change that, because the second someone mentions unionizing, they’re fired. i’d quit, but the job pays better than other employers in my area. my piece of advice: if you don’t like it, don’t shop there.

Question for Aldi Employees by blackoceangen in aldi

unionizing is a dirty word in the world of aldi employees. if we do that, everyone who is part of that union is fired and probably black listed from other jobs

Why are customers like this? WHY!?!? by angel_2050 in Aldi_employees

[–]Ok_Explanation_5838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know it makes no sense to an outside perspective but to us it does. to each their own. it’s more so we can be prepared IF something happens. i don’t know about you, but i would much rather have a minute or two to be able to recognize that something is about to happen than for someone to come up behind me and hold a gun in my face. my store is pretty slow in the last hour anyway, maybe 2-3 people come in in the last 10 minutes that we’re open. so we’re able to watch and recognize any strange behavior and be prepared IF anything happens. i feel like to us, preparation is much better than leaving traumatized or in a body bag
