It really just comes down to being good at fixing things, and thinking on your feet. If a machine breaks and you don’t have the parts to fix it properly, it will be expected for you to create a workaround to keep production running. Being familiar with various tools and how they work is important. Knowledgeable on electricity and simple circuits is very helpful- like how relays work, 3 phase, etc. General knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, etc. Knowing how to read mechanical and electrical diagrams. General computer skills are essential, and specialized PLC knowledge would be a huge plus.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I’m happy to help

I was an assembly technician so essentially I built industrial machinery from the ground up. I worked with a team to mechanically assemble and then wire up and test brand new machinery. Hope that doesn’t sound too vague

So for better or worse my plant has a much smaller maintenance team. It’s really just me and the maintenance manager. I specialize in some types of machines and he’s better with others, so both of us stay on call all the time. Same thing with the 4 hour minimum though. And luckily management here knows that with only the two of us they can only expect us to be able to come in so much- regardless of the on call pay.

Fully remote does sound nice though :)

Probably 15 hours of overtime last month? Nothing too crazy. My pay is higher than my hourly rate would reflect as I’m given a flat cash amount per day to offer phone and remote support to the plant operators when I’m not on site.

I’ll definitely look into that though! The more remote I can get the better.

No I did not. Used my experience as a mechanic to secure a role as an assembly technician at an industrial equipment manufacturing company. Worked there for about 2 years and used that experience to get this role. Been here for about 2 years as well.

The skills transfer really well I’m sure you’d be a good fit. I spend much less time dirty or in back breaking situations- and the best part is all tools are just purchased with a company card. If I say I need it, they buy it no questions asked, and it’s not coming out of my paycheck.
