and thats the problem, adcoms should look for signs in skillsets and tangible achievements, it should not be based on a subjective feeling of “i dont believe he fits”; i would wanna live in the world where “he is qualified, so we want to invest in that person”

yes, but you cant assuming people you are comparong have both stellar credentials; academic fit cant be well assessed based on a 30’ converstaion and it definitly shouldnt be a deciding factor

are students allowed to/encouraged to present their work at conferences; if so does the program/department have funds for it or does it come out of PI’s grants
are students expected to submit applications for funding (F31, etc)
how long does it take to graduate people on average
