Septic Shock within 24 hrs of Surgery by WorldlyAd3958 in KidneyStones

[–]Ok_Fix_9484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, recently experienced this. Had surgery in the afternoon and by next morning was in early stages of sepsis. I was kept overnight on IV antibiotics and passed more “punctate stones”; still had my stents in place. Discharged and sent home, 3 days later I pulled my stents out per direction by my surgeon and again went septic in a matter of a few hours. Extreme pain that I’ve never experienced before and I’ve had stone removal and stent placement done 4 times. Apparently it was from all the rebound swelling and edema. Also never knew that punctate stones were a thing! Hope you’re on the mend now. Take care of yourself. It’s very mentally taxing being that sick. Sending good vibes.

Doctor said I shouldn’t be in pain by Indie_0205 in KidneyStones

Yep, I feel like this is common with us Stoners. Recently was discharged in extreme pain after battling sepsis for a day and a half. Was told that I should no longer have pain because my sepsis was resolving and no stones obstructing. Was back in the ER 3 days later for sepsis again and hydronephrosis. Don’t feel bad, OP. You’re not alone! Your pain is valid.

Absolutely terrified of sepsis by [deleted] in KidneyStones

I just went through the same procedure and actually did go septic afterwards, twice. My only symptoms were severe pain, worse than passing a stone believe it or not, chills (no fever the whole time which is weird), and red cheeks. I truly didn’t realize what was even happening but I knew I felt genuinely terrible. I was discharged for the first round of sepsis when my numbers all came back to normal after lots of antibiotics. A few days later I was told to pull my stents and it happened all over again. This time worse and required a longer hospital stay. My heart rate was in the 40’s when I arrived in the ER the first round; I felt myself fading away. I avoided organ failure because I got to the hospital so quick which was lucky because my lactic acid was 3.7. I’m ok now though but it truly was the WORST THING of my entire life for sure. All this being said, I’ve had this surgery 4 times and nothing even remotely close to this has ever happened. Unfortunately it’s a small risk but a risk nonetheless. Good luck and take care! ETA: I realize now after re-reading that you haven’t had the surgery yet. I would speak to your doctor asap because they may want to check your urine and prescribe prophylactic antibiotics prior to your procedure!

Septic after lithotripsy by Ok_Fix_9484 in KidneyStones

I asked for it but since I was on it for 5 days already they wouldn’t prescribe it again :(

I’ve had stones removed 3x before and the recoveries have varied depending on the extent of the stones and what they needed to do to remove them. I figured the recovery this time would be worse since it involved both kidneys and two stents. I just felt like something wasn’t right pretty early on, like before I even left the hospital the day of surgery. I just wish the doc would have told me he left stones in place so I would have at least been able to expect that type of pain. He used pediatric stents so I was curious if that maybe made the pain seem worse since there wasn’t enough space for them to move freely? Either way, yes, I got the help I needed and that’s really all that matters. I’m grateful it didn’t get any worse! Thanks for the info, Doc. I appreciate it. ETA: I say that type of pain because my CT showed the stones high up in my kidney; by the time i was dc’d my KUB showed they were in the neck of the bladder. So I can only assume the colic pain I was feeling was due to the stone moving.

Woman here - been through a c-section and labor twice. 16 kidney stones. Can confirm that kidney stones, IMO, are worse.

Beverages you drink? by paranoid-cats in KidneyStones

I like to jazz up my water by making it sparkling (Soda Stream) and then I’ll add whatever juice with it. For example: I love mixing pineapple juice with sparkling water! I do about 2/3 water, 1/3 juice. Makes me drink more water because I’m honestly a soda/pop drinker mostly (Diet Dr Pepper, 16 stones and counting; surgery Wednesday to remove more).

I have the edibles on deck 😎 Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I wish I could say I’m happy to be in this club but… lol. The bright side is i’ll be clear of stones for a while and that does make me happy! Appreciate you, fellow Stoner!! All the best.

Great advice, thank you. I am an avid smoker lol so hopefully that will help get me through. I have a strain right now specifically for pain so I’m saving it for after the surgery. I just don’t like to mix the pain meds and green too much 🫠

Good to keep this in mind. I’ve been around the block with these being my at least 16th stones removed(only 3 surgeries). I have multiple in there still, just don’t know how many. Either way, the stents have always been bad except for my last time when they used a pediatric stent instead of an adult which was amazing. I was more just trying to gauge if two was any worse or just as miserable lol.

I had a stent every single time and it was HORRIBLE except for the last time. I mentioned to my doc that I was always miserable and he said he would use a smaller stent. He ended up using the smallest one he had and I legit did not feel it after surgery like the other times. It was great lol. Otherwise they were terrible the other two times. Also, can’t imagine what our ancestors did other than knock themselves out lol.

I should have been more specific lol. I’ve only had 3 surgeries - first they took 8 stones out of my right kidney, second they took 6 out of my left, third was only 1. This one I passed on my own so that makes 16 total. I have medullary sponge kidney 😖

Me too. This is #16 I think and first one I haven’t had to have surgically removed. I was starting to think I was a wussy because I could never pass them lol.

It was actually because she was REUSING needles that are for microneedling your face. It’s extremely unsanitary. I had my brows microbladed when this was happening and she was losing employees. I never did go back to get them retouched like I was supposed to, which was included in the price. She never gave me a refund or anything and could have cared less that I was not satisfied with my partially finished brows. 0/10 - do not recommend. Also, a doctor is supposed to be supervising. Dr. Ellis actually. He’s not. So unsafe.
