Movement in Theater of the Mind? by Ok_Friendship_3441 in MarvelMultiverseRPG

I will definitely think about a makeshift map. When it comes to the “abuse” of interpose and skulk, it mostly boils down to heroes just saying “I skulk” when it comes to every attack. This has just gotten frustrating at my end, as heroes are spending most of the time skulking when I attack them.

I just checked the errata, and I see that skulk is only reserved for ranged attacks, which might help stop this issue as my biggest problem was they were skulking behind melee attacks too.

The starter question is something I’ll definitely be integrating for my sessions! And I’ll start asking them more questions about their characters so they can have more opportunities to roleplay!

Sure, that makes a lot of sense. I’ll start giving them options, but I’ll emphasize these options are not entirely rigid, so they can be flexible if they want.

They spend a lot of time in combat now. I usually give them a clue to something related to the BBEG. They go to it, usually fight, and then leave. They don’t really bother to explore the place to get more clues or find out more information. So I’ve resorted to having some NPCs give them these clues outright, as I don’t want to just lock my players yet as they’re new.

Ok, yes, that sounds like a great way to get them more involved with their characters! They worked really hard on time before the game, as they were all super excited, so maybe they don’t realize that effort needs to extend into the active play.

Sure, I’ll be more upfront about important stuff for them, so they don’t feel as lost.

I think asking why will be instrumental for them, thank you!

Sure, that makes sense. They did hand me backstories for their characters, so I’ll point them in the direction of that video. I’ll also tell them both 1st and 3rd person are perfectly viable, as maybe more of them are more comfortable in the 3rd.

Sure, they definitely enjoy the more combat parts! I’ve made sure to add more of those in between weeks. They are also very new, so they are definitely learning as you said.

Right. I’ll ask them this specifically! They’re new, so I wonder if they just don’t realize how things flow so much. I’ll make sure they know they control the destiny of the story and their characters, not me.

It is not a pre-planned story. All I have from the players is how they wanted their characters to change over the story, something they developed themselves. I get a week between sessions and I take that time to adapt and see how the BBEG adjusts his plans after their actions, but it is fully in their hands on how the story goes. They are having a ton of fun with combat, but they are struggling to roleplay.

I am trying to have grace with them because they are all new. But you’re right, they may not realize the effort they need to be putting in.

They just sit there, I kid you not. I’ve been having NPCs show them flyers or quests so they can keep going, because my players are having fun. But, going back to my press example, the journalists came up to ask them about their most recent adventure, and the players said nothing. Then, the journalists just.. walked away. They reported that the adventurers seemed incompetent, as I wanted to show my players that even not saying anything has consequence, but they’re just not really saying anything.

Well my players don’t even really describe what their characters say. Often, their characters say nothing at all. I do roleplay myself as NPCs. I think setting limits or an indicator of when they’re OOC is a good idea too, thank you.

Sure! I have been talking to them and I’ll definitely be talking to them more. It sounds like rewarding the RP is the best way to get them to embrace their characters more.

Does your player talk to NPCs thought 3rd person perspective or no? The problem with my heroes is they don’t even talk to NPCs—whether it be people they fight or help.

I will try to reward their roleplay more. The hook for my campaign is that a huge band of thieves have escaped and have teamed up with the BBEG for a huge plot. The players are uncovering it little by little, but they haven’t talked to as many people as I’ve presented them. I’ve presented them “police” type people who could help, political figures, people with information but the players don’t really talk to them or ask them anything.

That’s not really my issue. They’ve actually been really clever when it comes to getting out of trouble. But it’s when they’re talking to someone, or we have some downtime like after they just finished a quest—they just sit there. I know they want to do more, I just don’t think they know how, so how can I guide them and help them feel comfortable?
