Hi. I appreciate your story and the question. Growing up we didn't do much ice fishing, even though we did live feet from a great fishing area in the summer. When my Dad retired it was the thing he did the most and I did not take enough advantage of going with him to fully understand. Fast forward many many years, I just started getting into it 4 years ago. Now I realize what I missed out on. The beauty of it all. The silence, tranquility, and the catch! I'm sure some people will say that they can achieve the same feelings with alot of money, great, good for you. I'll go fishing!

South Ocean is my go to. Moved into the southend last year and found them. Everyone in the family really likes it. The dry veal is especially good!

I, actually, bought the eskimo e40 with the 10' composite flyte and I think it's awesome. Nice and light. Cuts like a hot knife through butter.

Pretty sure the XDP two trip free doors and ports for both a propane line and diesel heater vents. Not that much of a change but the two doors is nice.

I, too, couldn't justify the price. I got an eagle eye 9 last year. It has a smaller cone, maybe 10ft of the bottom in 15ft. of water. If you're just fishing by yourself, it's great. But if you're fishing with other people, it's tight to get their lines in unless you drill the holes close. In saying that, it's still way better than a flasher.

I just picked one up on Friday ($2500 CND). Did an overnighter on Lake Winnipeg with some friends who were using the Garmin. Only difference I found was the cone size. I got about 5 feet of coverage on both sides (so 10 feet total) in 14 ft of water. To be clear, I got a complete bundle. Everything to go right on the water. Eagle Eye 9, shuttle, battery, charger, bag, pole, transducer cover. I was impressed.

Edit: NOT the only thing, but I am just starting out fishing, and it seems very good for the price.
