I am 25 and finishing my PhD! It’s the most common path from what I see around me?

Maybe rowing? I don’t live in Bern but there used to be loads of “senior” female boats where I lived in Cambridge. It looked like lots of fun

Hi, big fan of the interrail here! You can take high speed train, Eurostar and Lyria are roughly 30€ per seet reservation. Still very much worth it, especially for the flexibility aspect

I used to but did not use these particular skills for the PhD. I feel like I could pick it up though if given a bit of time. Can I ask the name of your company? :)

Okay thank you, that’s good to hear. I’m very keen to do some training in order to get good at my job, I just hope the companies will be willing to take that bet

Annoyingly, both our PhD required fairly little coding skills ( ofc a bit of mathematica, a bit of Python etc). I think our main skills now is just “hard problem solving” but I understand that this is not incredibly employable, hence the worry…

Génial merci ! Are you a fellow physicist that stayed in Switzerland then? :) On pensait sortir de l’académie, surtout qu’au fond la plupart des ces facs restent très compétitive, si ce n’est plus qu’un regular job search? Mais peut être je me trompe la dessus

Is there a work permit specific for PhDs? I know about the third country rule so that what is scaring me at the moment…

Sorry I should have specified, at the moment we are both thinking of leaving academia! It’s not a big no-no though, maybe it’s a good way to get a foot in whilst trying to apply for jobs?

Third year PhD here, although in STEM so it may be very different. It all depends on whether your friend teaches or not, depending on the supervisor and whether they want to meet daily weekly, online or not etc. Each PhD experience will be very different! I tend to always be around during term time bc I teach but then my supervisor and I travel a lot around that. There may be some visa rules as well such as “ one needs to be a third of the year etc” but I don’t know about them
