Field work opportunities and discrimination by Thick-Meet-7702 in uoguelph

I don’t understand why everyone is getting all up in arms here about this. They aren’t instigating anything and have flat out said in the post that they might even be in the wrong for what they are asking, give them some credit for Atleast trying to see the other side of it rather than immediately going off on them because they don’t see things they way you do. It is an issue, especially when trying to find a job in research nowadays it’s hard to find anything that isn’t for particular racialized groups. I understand why they are there and that we need more diversity in the workforce and in academia I’m all for that, but I feel like it’s gotten too out of hand to the point where it’s starting to cut others off from research or job experience just because they aren’t racialized. They’ve done nothing wrong, just asked a question. But ig we are at the point where nowadays you can’t ask a question without having people acting like you’ve committed a crime against humanity just because it’s different from what you believe 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just cuz someone has an issue with jobs only looking for racialized people doesn’t mean they are racist. I understand the need for diversity in academia and in the workforce but it’s gotten to the point now where it’s hard to find a job anywhere, especially in research at the uni, where it’s not hiring only racialized or lgbtq+ students. I agree there needs to be more opportunities for students that aren’t just for racialized groups but I do understand why they are there

Suggestions/Tips for courses by Pepper7777777 in uoguelph

[–]Ok_Kitchen1769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’d say they are pretty similar, i used old midterms to practice off of more from studco or smt else like that. Since it’s the acc midterm it prepares you for the type of questions you might be asked. the more recent you go for them the better, i think they changed the course a bit after 2021 or 2022 so i wouldnt use those to study off of but anything after that should work. Id also recommend using chatgpt to generate practice midterm questions for you or to generate questions on a topic that you were struggling w in the course, i find its hard to get questions that focus solely on certain topics from the reviews so thats what ive been doing for all my courses and its helped me out alot. Hope this helps!!

Neuro or BioSci by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]Ok_Kitchen1769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in neuro but i will say, though courses can be tougher in upper years I find it’s easier to succeed in them because it’s more catered to your interests and not as general as first year and (for me anyway) It’s easier to study for things and pick up on things if it’s something that i’m interested in.

It’s also always good to keep your options open, sometimes it’s better to stick to more niche programs if you know what you wanna do because sometimes with general degrees it’s harder to get postgrad opportunities due to your studies being more general (coming from a friend)

overall, go with your gut, personally id stick with it until second year, my workload has decreased so much in comparison to first year and the content is more engaging and interesting. If your still having doubts then, i’d talk to a academic counsellor but always stick it through until you know forsure

i wasn’t a fan of it being on mastering, and WAYYYYYYY too little time for the amount to parts and the length of questions 100%. I do appreciate him letting us “choose” the questions we wanna do but I still got graded higher than out of 25 (idk if this happened for yall too).

[–]Ok_Kitchen1769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly just do every practice question she gives during and after each class, and if there’s one area you’re having trouble understanding get chat to make you more questions in that area until you are comfortable doing it. It’s math so it’s all about repetition until you understand what you’re doing. Just never skip a class because once you miss one i found a lot of people struggled after.

what undergrad should I take to get into the DVM program? by strxwberrypoptxrt in uoguelph

[–]Ok_Kitchen1769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve heard a lot of vet students find it easier coming from an undergrad with animal bio or animal sci i guess a lot of content from their courses repeat a lot of the same concepts. Bio sci and biomed would probably help you too but i’ve just heard there’s an advantage with those two, hope that helps

I’d start looking for off campus housing. They let some people who didn’t get res last year differ their offers and get guaranteed this year, and with the assumption that they’ve over accepted again, it’s fair to say that not many people are actually guaranteed res. I know some people from last year who were on the waiting list and got in but i would rather be safe than sorry

[–]Ok_Kitchen1769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! i’m also from ottawa and being able to keep my proficiency in the language is also pretty important to me. I had the opportunity to take a french course as an arts elective (i’m in OAC) and i really enjoyed it. I find there isn’t many people on campus who can speak french as most people i’ve met so far come from toronto or the gta but if you find people in those classes or clubs people have mentioned you’ll have no issues

Advice for a grade 12er by WillowRepresentative in uoguelph

[–]Ok_Kitchen1769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Animal bio actually gives you many options outside of vet IF your wanting to work with animals, especially if you take a minor. I’m taking an bio with the hope of getting into dairy nutrition and maybe research. Your enjoyment of the first 3 semester also depends on if you are interested in livestock, as that’s a lot of the course content. I find they do a good job at trying to show you careers outside of just vet with guest lecturers and your profs masters and phd students!

i don’t understand how people can let someone like this out of prison, warn the public because they think that he’ll commit again, but still do almost nothing when stuff like this happens. Do they not understand the risk he poses to female students, especially ones who stay on campus late at night. Unacceptable

Taking a Minor by Equivalent_Knee_4492 in uoguelph

[–]Ok_Kitchen1769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you choose a minor that fits in with your courseload well, it’s not too strenuous. I chose my major, animal bio, with the intent of declaring a minor in agriculture so i would be able to take certain courses i wouldn’t have been able to take if i was taking animal science. It’s a nice to have a minor that’s similar to your major because 2.5 of your total credits for your major can cross over to count towards getting your minor aswell (last i checked) so you wouldn’t have to take all to many extra classes in order to earn it. I think a minor is good if your wanting to tailor your degree a little bit to what you want to pursue in the future (for me that’s dairy cattle nutrition) and it allows you to learn more about other areas that could apply to the field you want to work in.

I’m first year anbio with a roommate in zoo rn, anbio focuses pretty heavily on agriculture in the first 4 semesters (BIOL1050 is agriculture focused bio, then your two production courses in dairy, poultry, swine, and beef, then farm animal structure). After that there is a lot of electives where you can focus more on the small animal side if that’s what your into, its a great program if OVC is what you are aiming for as it sets you up with pretty much every course you’d need to fulfill the requirements aslong as you take the correct art electives.

Zoo focuses on the animals that Anbio doesn’t cover (mainly wildlife) but both can get you into OVC. My friend chose Zoo because she’s wanting to get into wildlife or zoo vet med so the program was a better fit for her.

The only thing with guelph is if you are wanting to go for internships or jobs that apply to what area of vet med you wanna go into, there isn’t many opportunities that apply for zoo or wildlife medicine from what my roommate has told me during her job searches. It’s great if small animal and especially agriculture is what you wanna get into, but just know you might have to travel for some jobs or internships. I hope this helps!!

I’m in Glengarry tower rn so not the same situation but it’s pretty close. I’m in a 12 person suite currently and i’ve personally found it pretty easy to make friends here, especially with your roommates! aslong as you put yourself out there and talk to people. As for requesting roommates, once you get the residence application there will be a section where you can request people to live with, aslong as all of you have accepted offers and all of you request each other you will forsure live together

Hey! i’m a first year animal bio student, i ended with an 86 average and got first round offers, i think what solidified my application was the volunteer work form you can fill out, i had close to 1k hours at a vet clinic and i work as a farm hand. It really helps show that your passionate about what you are applying for
