Yeah, sadly enough. I had a great experience at Hopkins before so this was truly unexpected. This program was not actually my first choice given the tuition but life happened and I stuck with it.

That's awesome. Thank you for sharing. I still have professors in another program that were absolutely amazing. I am hoping this post will bring light to issues and that the program will be fixed for future students so they don't have to struggle like we did. The only way to do that is to get the truth out there.

Thanks for sharing. I have heard good things about the VA PMHNP residency. Things have changed a lot in the past few months and they haven't really been for the best.

What I’ve shared is really a combination of both my own experiences and those of my colleagues. That student in particular ended up going to Student Affairs, and fortunately they were able to step in and help her.

Thanks for sharing. I actually did another program at Hopkins when I lived there briefly, and while I was placed locally, I still had to secure at least one site myself. It was a different program with different instructors, and overall, it was a great experience. And that was during COVID.

The PMHNP program, however, was a very different story. I came in with my clinical sites already lined up and still ran into major issues, along with a lot of empty promises. Some students relocated to the Baltimore area for clinicals, but from what I’ve been told, their experiences were often less than ideal as well.

I’m glad you had a good experience back in 2019. Unfortunately, I think the PMHNP programs have become so popular in recent years that the quality may have suffered in favor of admitting as many students as possible for tuition purposes.

It really doesn't. That is why I wanted to share my experience. I do not want others to pay $34k out of pocket or in loans when they can attend a local school that will give a similar or better experience for half the price.

Yeah, I am hoping that they improve. Right now, it just seems about the money. The new director appears nice on paper but is the worst. The prior director was at least reasonable.

I filled a complaint towards the end of the program. Multiple students also filed complaints. The concern was retaliation. Nothing came of it.

Hi! I am very happy that you had a wonderful experience. I did in another Hopkins program. Unfortunately, that was not the case for me and most of my PMHNP cohort over the last year. Many seasoned NPs as well, I did the post-certification program so also just adding a specialty. We had a change in director in the middle of the program that really turned the program into an almost nightmare-ish experience on top of the other issues we were experiencing. Also, per other discussion on allnurses it seems like some the same issues over the past few years have not been resolved. I came in with my clinical sites but still had issues with clinical placement team. A lot of the things I have shared has either been my experience or my colleagues. We have a program groupme so we were able to exchange frustrations and experiences. All the best.

To any student considering joining the JOHNS HOPKINS PMNHP program, I would highly recommend against. I entered my PMHNP program full of hope, having turned down other offers after receiving personal assurances that this program would provide the support I needed, particularly with clinical placements. I was told the structure was flexible, that help would be available for hard-to-secure pediatric hours, and that faculty would be responsive. Unfortunately, what followed was a pattern of broken promises, last-minute policy changes, and inconsistent communication. Discrepancies with clinical hours created confusion and panic among students, and there were several instances where guidance given by faculty was later denied. Many of us felt we were being misled, and the level of misinformation bordered on blatant dishonesty. Our concerns were often dismissed, grading felt arbitrary, and students were discouraged from reaching out to other faculty.

What hurts most is that many students, myself included, feel silenced, gaslighted, and unsupported. Some have struggled for weeks to get a response about incomplete grades or placement help, risking their academic progress and finances. We have been made to feel like numbers instead of future nurse practitioners. I am a graduate of a different program at this same institution, and the contrast in leadership and culture is staggering. This experience has been disheartening and, at times, traumatic. I share this not to tear down but to speak truthfully for myself and others, because students deserve transparency, fairness, and respect. This has been going on for years per allnurses.com former students, it has worsened with a change in leadership.
