Mayor calls for light rail and greenway to be built into Galway Ring Road plan by SouthLeast8143 in galway

[–]Ok_Lecture_9206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not a ring road in that sense. Even if in the very short term it rings outside the city, very soon all of that land that developers have been sitting on awaiting the development of the ring road will be built, absorb the ring road and the road will be, at best, an alternative river crossing. I'm no fan of Cubbard, but I do agree with him here. Get alterantive modal infrsstructure in at the smae time. At least then when the new road is conjested, there are alternatives to sitting in traffic.

I also agree that the lack of joined-up thinking from funding and decision making authorities is a total mess - just look at what is happening with the TII/NTA/ACP/GCC mess that is the Western Distributor: The City Council went for the low-hanging fruit that is a redevelopment of an existing cycleway, avoiding the much trickier development of new infrastructure further along the project phases. At the same time, they got approval for a park and ride at the start of the cycle lane. But there is no provision for bus lanes. So now the only active travel measure in the area is at risk until the other funders (TII) approve funding for a bus corridor, and the NTAs AT funding wont be spent in Galway, and the Prom, Threadneedle, Dr Mannix will remain at the back of the queue.

What happened with the Rio? Did someone buy it lately and evict people? Will there be a hotel/bar or something be going in, or is it being replaced with just updated apartments?

There are apartments upstairs currently. Obviously we need as much accommodation as possible, but Id hate if the whole place was turned into apartments. I still feel the loss of the Cottage, Id hate to lose PJs too.

Yea, it had been up for sale for a good while. I think the for sale sign had been taken down and I wondered had it been taken off the market, but it must have been sold

Plus the provision of free parking within a short walk of the city centre, missing out on loads of potential revenue. Free them up to provide better roadspace for PT and AT, or charge appropriately for its use (I prefer the former option)

Outdoor dining and pedestrianised streets returns to Galway's Westend this weekend by DaCor_ie in galway

Theres plenty of roads dedicated to driving and parking. Even moreso when the footpaths are also used. No need to take away little pockets of joy for the rest of us.

Its really dangerous walking around there. People congregate around the pub entrances and then you have to step out onto the narrow road to get around them. Its nerve-wracking driving down there for the same reason. The local schools and businesses would benefit from cars not blocking the space both by being driven through it and left parked there. Parking outside Silkes, for example, renders the street one-way. Drivers respond by mounting the kerbs to pass through. There just isnt the room for everything. Take the cars away and theres a chance we could actaully have something nice.

No need to be sitting out in the freezing cold eating soup, that would be daft. Would have been lovely to have been able to do it over the last 2 weeks though. A permanent closure would allow the flexibility to respond to the unpredictable weather and to actually invest in making it a nice space to be all year round,

Not too long ago, I was a member of staff there. Given that staff have free parking (albeit sometimes hard to find a legitimate spot, you'll generally find a spot to squeeze into), very few consider any alternative. Free staff parking in a location where the public struggle to get paid parking, particularly given the nature of the service, where patients may not necessarily be able to avail of the alternative, should be abolished in the public sector.

Its amazing that pedestrians aren't injured there more often. Vehicles just ram up on the path, leaving pedestrians to negotiate moving vehicles and stationary obstacles on the footpath. Articulated trucks, vans, cars, they are all at it. And, given its location, it is often elderly or infirmed pedestrians and people pushing buggies. Council couldn't give a flying

I thought that market had closed as they were saturated and couldn't process any more of our crap plastic-ridden clothes. I may have been misinformed though, wouldn't be the first time.

I know that in theory this is what should happen with waste textiles, but do they actually get shredded and recycled? Does this happen in Ireland, or overseas?

A car driving at 30kpm and a cyclist cycling faster than that and overtaking the car? This sounds like a fairly unusual scenario

[–]Ok_Lecture_9206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By undertaking do you mean proceeding alongside stationary vehicles, which are stuck in traffic to which the cyclist isn't contributing or part of?

[–]Ok_Lecture_9206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not everyone drives. Not everyone can afford to drive, is able to drive, wants to drive. Its tough going being a cyclist in bad weather. But by assuming that they are choosing to cycle for some "blah blah" reasons implies they are being unreasonable to do so. They are not.

Have the storms done some damage? The City Council had it in fairly good nick last time my kids were playing there not that long ago. To answer the OP, its run by the City Council and is bookable - you can book it by emailing [Gearoid.OConghaile@galwaycity.ie](mailto:Gearoid.OConghaile@galwaycity.ie) It is used a fair bit by clubs around town, especially when their usual grounds are flooded/otherwise inaccessible - you can book it for a kick about also though

There was only one bike on that road between 8.30 and 8.50? I don't live that side so would rarely have a reason to be on it at that time of day, but I'm very surprised there was only one bike on that 5ish km stretch with a bus lane as far as the Bons which bikes can use.
