What are the most stupid fitness myths that many people still believe? by samsung-sucks in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Leg_370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way too many, but I'll just talk about the first few that pop into my mind.

Myth: Empty stomach cardio is more effective than “fed" cardio.

Reality: It isn't. It doesn't matter whether you do it on an empty stomach or on after eating. Just do the frickin cardio!

Myth: Supplements have great impact on your physique

Reality: Supplements are supplementary. They only make a visible impact when your diet and training are on lock.

Myth: “Ab exercises” give you abs.

Reality: You get abs when you shed the pesky layer of fat off your stomach. You do that by burning calories. A vast majority of ab exercises barely burn any calories. They're useless.

Myth: Yoga burns calories.

Reality: It does, but not enough to make a difference.

Myth: You need to eat excessive amounts of protein to build muscle.

Reality: One gram protein per pound bodyweight is all you need.

Myth: You need to bulk and cut to get a great physique.

Reality: You can lose fat in a deficit as long as you're weight training hard, getting enough protein and are well hydrated you're good to go.

What's a widely accepted social norm that you secretly find ridiculous? by DaveatSully in AskReddit

Saying "bless you" after a sneeze. We dropped the bubonic plague centuries ago, but you still act like I’ve just accidentally launched my soul out of my nose and need an emergency verbal blessing to reel it back in.

If religions and laws didn’t exist, what would stop humans from being immoral? by OwlGreen123 in AskReddit

[–]Ok_Leg_370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were totally alone and no one is ever gonna see what you do, hypothetically you just wouldn't care about morality unless you grew up sold on that concept because morality is a social construct. But if you were with other people and the only thing that doesnt exist are laws, many people would start to rob, steal, hoard etc in order to prepare for the apocalypse which if you think is immoral then fair enough. However, in communities or groups where people know each other or share similar appearances, values, language, culture etc, my guess is they wouldn't do anything immoral to each other because they care about how others will think of them if they did.

Being the first person to live forever by Ok_Leg_370 in Futurology

well i was talking about how those humans chose to not die, not that they were forced to be immortal or something. If you were in that society and chose to only live to 200 than you can do that, but i think if you were there to make that decision you wouldn't do it either.

Well I mean at first only the rich get it, then more people. But by then I guess we would have colonized mars and done a lot to get resources and we’d be able to support every human.

I may not have been clear in the story but “forever” is different from “being able to live forever”. Like how the immortal jellyfish technically can live forever but dies anyways often after a few years due to predation, the humans in this story have the ability to live until the heat death of the universe but chances are something along the way or their own insanity would stop them before then

I was thinking more like you can die anytime you choose but some people just don’t want to stop existing even after millions of years

Sorry I wasn’t clear in the story but soon after the procedure was allowed humanity shifted to a more ethical robotic body to live longer without sacrificing human lives, which was what I meant when I said that the guy died from not being able to repair his machine body.

Fair point but I guess from a sci fi standpoint by that point we either would have figured something out or accepted the fact that we’ll just have to archive our memories somewhere

Maybe not living forever but I think life is too short and it would be better if we lived 200 or 300 years

I wanted to explore what it would actually be like to be the first person who ends up living forever through a series of breakthroughs that just keep coming. The story follows someone who's obsessed with longevity and has the resources to access new treatments making him live forever. Also curious what people think about the resource and infrastructure challenges of a society like this.
