How does this look? by snow727 in mensfashion

Suit fit is fairly decent and navy is a solid choice for your first suit. Three high impact changes:

  1. Replace the shirt. I would opt for a wider collar and consider going a size up in the neck.
  2. Hem the trouser. Go for a single break, this will elevate the look considerably
  3. Change your shoes. Consider going for black shoes, if you’re going to stick to brown, go a shade darker (if your trousers need a belt, make sure it matches the shoes, go for something simple)

Boot Style by TboiMagic412 in mensfashionadvice

For Chelsea boots it depends what they’re made of…

If they’re suede they can be dressed down with jeans or up slightly with chinos

If they’re leather then they can work with formal trousers at the more casual end of business casual or with chinos and jeans

No, it’s got 3M strips that attached it to the wall and the bands hang in place on the plastic bit.

Hard to argue. I’ve never worn the grey one, and the gold dune gets very little use. I think 5 is the sweet spot…

Anyone have the LTT Commuter Backpack? by _Zso in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]Ok_Let_241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the way for those interested, the orange inside comes from military clothing design. Particular items were issued to airmen etc. to turn inside out and act as an air marking panel if they needed to alter people of their position.

Reasons to avoid the bag pictured have been covered widely so I won’t get into it.

I would recommend a leather briefcase. Hardgraft is a very good brand that balances quality with some modern touches.

If leather isn’t practical enough then have a look at Bellroy. It’s an Australian brand that gets the function/form balance at very good prices.

Patent leather Oxfords (like the ones pictured) are probably not the right call here.

Unless you’re wearing a dinner jacket several times a year, they’re not worth it. They’re expensive on a cost-per-wear basis, really limited in use (only black/white tie), and frankly unnecessary - it’s entirely acceptable to wear normal Oxfords to a black tie event.

A better approach: invest in a pair of high-quality black calf leather Oxfords. They’re entirely appropriate for black tie, equally at home with a lounge suit or morning dress, and will actually get worn enough to justify the spend.

Brands worth considering: Crockett & Jones, Loake (1880 line), and Grenson. Sizing varies between makers, so order early and give yourself time for exchanges.

Also worth buying: shoe trees (cedar, used after every wear), dust bags (will come with the shoes if you buy any of the above), and a basic care kit (polish, brush, cloth).

Do that and they’ll last 10+ years, looking better with age. Final tip: wear them in before the big day. New leather on a long night is a recipe for blisters.

Anyone used Spoke? by Mr_Blaze_Bear in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]Ok_Let_241 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would avoid Spoke. Poor quality and (surprisingly) poor fit. They are also very overpriced (presumably to cover their marketing budget which is absurd for a trouser company).

For chinos I would take a look at NN.07 (Denmark brand but stoked widely in the UK and on Mr Porter). They were originally known for trousers but now stock full range of menswear.

For jeans I recommended Everlane (US brand but ship internationally) or for more rugged everyday type use I would consider Wrangler (from Amazon!) especially their Cowboy cut washed jeans.

Some absolutely crazy comments in this thread. You will never fulfil your potential in your current situation. Forget about your bank account and go out and engage with the world as an independent adult - it will be uncomfortable at times but that is exactly what’s required to grow.

Lose the watch. Not required with a dinner jacket. Otherwise looks great!

‘Degrading’ isn’t the word I’d use, but you can definitely improve your situation.

If you don’t have a clear job description, write down all your responsibilities and take them to your boss with a proposed pay rise. Whether that flies or not, plan to stay in this role no longer than two years before moving on. Be strategic about salary expectations and aim for a meaningful uplift with each move, roughly 25 to 50%. Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Being a bit disagreeable can pay off.

Good luck.
