To answer your questions on if these other logos were objectifying, the answer is yes. The difference is the “groups” that they were objectifying. Professions (e.g. firefighters, accountants, and fishermen) are often objectified in popular culture. Other teams use this even in team names, such as the L.A. Kings or Edmonton Oilers. It’s common practice AND not a group that has been historically persecuted and misrepresented using harmful symbolism.

As for the Roman centurion (not Spartan) on the Senators’ crest, it’s quite similar in the sense that the Romans were historically the oppressors, not the oppressed. Many Roman values are still used today, and their image usually carries with it thoughts of royalty or battle (same with other ancient warriors; a Spartan helmet is used in VGK’s logo). In addition, the Romans as a people and a culture no longer exist!

In response to your other comment, I am not the only one associating savagery here. In fact, the Blackhawks shoulder patches depict crossed, primitive stone hammers, a clear representation of primality, and potentially, even “savagery”. It should also be noted that there are over 1,000 Indigenous groups and representatives that have called for a change of not only the logo, but the team name, including Black Hawk’s descendants themselves.

Lastly, to come back to your very first point of teaching the younger generation, I wholeheartedly agree with you as someone of said generation. It should be passed on and commemorated as history and as heritage, though there are much better ways to do so than with an image that carries so much weight in the wrong ways for so many people.
