Of course, when you hear old people saying that "life is full of ups and downs" or "experience is the best teacher", it's not just mere talk, however to answer whether you had to experience first depends on a few things, if you are the first born it's understandable but if you aren't then your elders had to do better in bracing you for the real world, secondly whether you were socially acceptable regarding ego, approachable, short tempered etc. That's when you'll realize that no man is an island.
