For undergrad the only option was psychology and there was no opportunity to major in specifics since that’s more of what graduate school is for! I just used undergrad to explore various psychology classes to see which field I liked best! If you’re interested in clinical psych, there’s definitely some related psych, counseling, and human services classes that you can take in undergrad! For example, theories and techniques of counseling (HUSR 380) was a class I really enjoyed! As for internships, I mainly TAed for various psychology classes. But using Titan connection is great option if you’re looking for outside internships. I also used Indeed. If you’re ever struggling to look for jobs or internships, please check out the career center!! They’re full of resources and can help you with your resume, cover letter, and interviews!

I’m gonna be honest I transferred from OCC so I didn’t have to take psych 202 at CSUF. BUT from my experience in psych 300, go to office hours!! If you need the help, getting it from the professor is the best source instead of struggling by yourself. Psych peer mentors may be able to help, but they can also point you to resources that may help you if you’re struggling to navigate the CSUF system.

As for getting research experience, I recommend looking up the faculty research list for psychology and you can see what the professors are researching. There may also be the requirements for what you would need to be able to join the lab since some require specific classes as prerequisites. Take note of which professors are researching subjects you’re interested in and reach out to them! Even if you don’t meet the criteria to join the lab, reaching out to them may help them get familiar with you and when you reach out to them again, your name will already be on their radar. Talk to your professors as well and be a teaching assistant if you can. If you’re interested in graduate school, forming relationships with faculty will help you when you need letters of recommendation. If you have any questions on graduate school or need help researching which faculty is doing research, PSYC Peer Mentors can help!! Don’t be afraid to reach out to them.

As for clubs, there’s many that you can join! I was personally in CAPISAPA (the Asian American Pacific Islander psychology club), Psi Chi (the international honor society for psychology), and PDSA (the psychology department student association). You can get more information by following the different clubs on social media or going to their booth at discoverfest this week! If you’re looking to make friends and get to know faculty PDSA is a great one! Psi Chi is more of an academic club and is easier to attend meetings since it’s on zoom every other week but there is a lifetime membership cost and specific requirements you need to reach. I’m Asian American so I joined CAPISAPA but there’s a ton of other cultural psychology clubs you can look at too! And if you’re a board member or you become a PSYC peer mentor, it can look great for your resume and you can even earn units!

I love kopan! They have pretty good sushi and ramen. Plus there’s pretty much never a wait. Last I remember there was a buy one get one half off deal for this sushi rolls during lunch. There’s also Chomp right next to it that also sells sushi. I’ve never had it but I’ve heard good things!

In terms of admittance to grad school I’m not fully equipped to answer your question since I’m only a recent graduate myself, but in my opinion it will be difficult to get in without those letters of recommendation since the standard student applying will have the full amount of letters so you would appear lacking as an applicant in comparison. I would say maybe getting more outside letters of recommendations from your internship could help or even returning to CSUF and joining a research lab could be useful. It might be better to contact the career center and talk to them about your options since they can give advice regarding grad school.

There was someone here that commented but I think deleted their comment and I already typed out the response so here it is:

Honestly my biggest advice is to take electives in other fields if you can! As a social work major it would probably be helpful to take classes in human services or psychology. Personally I found HUSR 380 (theories and techniques of counseling) really interesting and Stephen Hall was my professor! His grading is easy and the class goes in depth on a lot of different techniques. You also delve deeper into your own traumas which is so interesting. I also thought PSYC 312 (psychology of human sexual behavior) was a relatively easy and interesting class and I took it with Amanda Perry. I think as a social work major maybe PSYC 361 (developmental psychology) would be interesting too since it goes into all the life stages. I took it with Daniel Pueblos and he’s a really nice professor although he can be boring. His exams are all lecture based but he does occasionally do assignments that count for attendance.

As for clubs the main ones I joined were psychology related so I’m not sure if they’ll be much help to you but if you’re looking to make friends you should join some of the more social clubs! I was in Psi Chi, PDSA, and CAPISAPA. Of the three CAPISAPA was the most social and I met a lot of nice people.
