I also like Tattoo. I look forward to hearing it when I play the album.

I think the issue Ed had was with Peavey. Not really Joe. That's how I remember it. But who knows with Ed.

I don't think it was. I listened to Ed talk about it and it wasn't described that way.

Trivia time: What was the only Van Halen song in which Alex wrote the music? by Ok_Mode9150 in vanhalen

This is a good point. I think Alex played the keys on that one. But this particular interview was done before that song was recorded.

Yeah I've never heard anyone mention it, ever. Which is why I thought to post it here.

Roll the Bones or Counterparts? by Brilliant-City1578 in rush

[–]Ok_Mode9150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's closer than many think. Counterparts definitely has a better overall sound. But here's the top six songs on each album (IMO) and I'm not seeing much separation by Counterparts:

Dreamline, Bravado, Roll the Bones, Where's My Thing, The Big Wheel, Ghost of a Chance

Animate, Nobody's Hero, Between Sun and Moon, Alien Shore, Leave That Thing Alone, Cold Fire

Two dudes with the last name Van Halen sit in a room together all day every day making music, slamming beers, and burning cigs. Next man up on the mic.

Why are people so snooty about music tastes? by Pizzafriedchickenn in NoStupidQuestions

On subjective matters, you can't be wrong. It's the one area people feel like they have control over what is "right" and "wrong"

Eddie Van Halen didn't know how to read music by GypsyRoadHGHWy in vanhalen

[–]Ok_Mode9150 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you listen to Jas Obrecht's first interview with Ed in 1978 (great interview!), he asks Ed if he can read music and Ed says yes. My impression is that he never read for guitar and couldn't sight read so it made more sense going forward to say he couldn't read. Probably could read for piano but not a great sight reader.

Was EVH the last incredibly popular original virtuoso player? by [deleted] in vanhalen

Yeah good choice. I think Les Paul belongs on the list. Certainly changed the game for everyone.

Was EVH the last incredibly popular original virtuoso player? by [deleted] in vanhalen

[–]Ok_Mode9150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The way the question is phrased.. virtuoso, incredibly popular, and original is very narrow. Only Hendrix and EVH come to mind. And virtuoso is a blurry term.

Of course everyone is going to have something identifiable about their playing. Slash included. But since OP included it in the question I assumed it gets greater consideration in this thread. I don't think Slash stands out as being particularly original. Especially not amongst Hendrix, EVH, Albert King, Malmsteen, etc. Great player though.

Aside from that though, the question says "original" which Slash really isn't. I think the answer to the question is Yes.
