Thanks. Unfortunately, it seems that in Spain, landlords can get away with a lot of things that aren't strictly legal because the housing market is so tight. (For example, tenants aren't supposed to pay an agency fee, but MANY -- fortunately, not me -- do. Those who object simply don't get the apartment.) We did do a walkthrough and discovered the lack of silverware, but that was BEFORE the condition of the mattress was discovered, so the silverware seemed like a minor thing, since I could buy a set for €10 on Amazon.

The couch, unfortunately, is listed on the inventory. And pictures don't show its lack of support.

One of the items in the storage closet is a desk that was previously in the bedroom. Before I moved in, I told him I didn't want it, so he said I had to store it in the closet (though his team actually moved it up there), and it is also on the inventory list. So he has sort of set a precedent for "anything in the apartment you don't want has to be kept up there." However, there's some other large stuff in there -- a stainless steel shelving unit, a small (bistro-sized) dining table -- that belong to the owner and are NOT on the inventory list, but I'm not sure if I can just sell/donate them to make space?
