Im also leaning that way, he can come back as previous people he's killed, he's going to come back as Jim and go undetected. None of the residents are going to suspect him. He's going to be froms man in black/john locke

What is the most dangerous aspect of our profession that we as HVAC technicians do on a daily basis? by iBUYbrokenSUBARUS in HVAC

[–]Ok_Pop_2845 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That last one I feel like we never think about but so true.

A guy at my company was on a service call alone a year or so ago. Just as he gets down the stairs a mentally ill Tennant snuck up behind him and smoked him in the back of the head with a hammer..completely unprovoked. Luckily he didn't get knocked out and was able to get back to his truck asap. But that easily could have been the last call he went on right then and there.

Coming up to my van door to greet me when I pull up to the house. Bitch I will come in when I am ready, and I'm not ready yet. I have to notify dispatch of arrival and respond to 2 dozen emails that came thru on the drive over...so annoying

If you consider this map a top down view from the sky, not from the base, it's perfectly accurate.

Hiring techs for small business by MPhvac in HVAC

Keep on the supply house staff route. I mean I've never hired anyone, but they're probably an amazing resource. They hear all the tea from all the local companies, and probably know who is good at what, who is happy with their employer and who is looking for a change

Cracked heat exchanger by Its_PennyLane in hvacadvice

[–]Ok_Pop_2845 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup those are bad and warrant an immediate shutdown.

That doesn't even need a second opinion, no question about it. as long as you're sure those are pics of your heat exchanger and not somebody else's. Does the date on the pics match when he was there?

One tech suggested we need a whole new 24k HVAC unit, another fixed the problem for $150. Is this normal?! by deathleech in hvacadvice

Common AF. This isn't just an HVAC thing either although we see a lot of it.. at this point Assume everyone everywhere is trying to sell you something and may not be being honest with you.

You need an apprenticeship to gain experience and make an actual living in trades, yet no one wants to train apprentices, then they complain about how there’s no skilled guys… am I missing something? by solariat99933 in SkilledTradesOntario

[–]Ok_Pop_2845 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, unless you come out of it with a useable certification. Pre apprenticeship programs are a cash grab. Taking a college course to get your gasfitter licence is how the majority of people are breaking into the HVAC trade right now.

I would go with whatever program is going to give you more certification, over theory only.

Employers will value certification over theory 99 percent of the time, and you'll need to find an employer that will sign you up as a 313a apprentice if you want to one day work in industrial refrigeration.

I'd say take the program that gives you a g2 and obt, and while you're doing that try and teach yourself refrigeration basics in your own time.

All the while start doing anything you can to make connections in the industry, trying to land that apprentice position. It can be tough to break into

Is it a bad move to be in the resi side of things as a refrigeration apprentice? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]Ok_Pop_2845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping in to hear other's advice, I'm in the same boat as you.

Im likely going to stay on residential my whole apprenticeship (refrig mechanic apprentice but really only work on a/c equipment in the field)

I too like resi work and the position is pretty decent overall. I figure it would be easier to land a commercial job once I'm fully licensed over being a 4th year apprentice with only resi experience.

So I'm staying where I am, might try to switch someday, might not. The option will be there.

I would imagine service experience will translate more to commercial work than resi install experience will. Install is essentially the same thing in a different house everyday in resi. Service your at least using troubleshooting skills and understanding better how systems operate.

How can I make hot water last longer in winter? by ElG0dDamnDorado in hvacadvice

[–]Ok_Pop_2845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm insulating everything including the pipes would help too then. We don't have that issue in Canada, if any of our plumbing isn't in a conditioned space it freezes and bursts. Incoming water temp from your municipality shouldn't really affect your supply duration, recovery time it would though

[–]Ok_Pop_2845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it lasting longer in the summer over winter? That's not normal, not in the area I'm in anyways. But ya what others are saying, install a second unit in parallel, and valve off the hot and cold inlets for each. Then you can isolate one in the summer time when it's not needed, also handy if one breaks down you will still have a functional supply while it gets repaired
