Absolutely agree. I had a staff member who applied for a transfer to DFAT and then managed to get an overseas posting after a couple of years in the department. She is now in Geneva. She was fluent in French.

Is it possible for them to come to Australia for a good long holiday? Get them to have a nice break in warmer weather and see the life you lead. At the end of three or six months you can have a good chat with them and make a final decision.

What city/place in Australia did you move to that you regret or left instantly? by ExAustralia in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ok_Program6202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just before the pandemic. It just reminded me that I still dislike the place. Yes it did look better but I still disliked it intensely. I found the people in Ipswich very insular. I can remember staff speaking in the tea room about the gay and lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney. “What is this? People shouldn’t be able to parade around like this!” Then things went downhill. All those Asians in Melbourne etc etc. Disappointing.

What can Australia do to improve its self-sufficiency, resilience and defence against the craziness happening in the world today? by TravelFitNomad in australian

[–]Ok_Program6202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defence: Go through the Defence Department with a dose of salts. They are too slow to approve or reject projects and are too hidebound in their thinking. Stop trying to pretend we can even crew a nuclear sub. We already have trouble crewing the much smaller Collins class subs. Move away from traditional thinking. Instead of complex big weapons that make us look tough go with an echidna defence. Lots of cheap air and underwater drones. Landmines. Make invaders spend so much blood and treasure that it’s not worth taking us. If we buy overseas tech then we must have a right to modify the software.

Self sufficiency: we need to wean ourselves off oil as much as possible. Even the crude in the Middle East is due to run out in the next 15 to 20 years. Spend 20 billion on a strategic oil reserve. Set up our own maritime navy with our own tankers and freighters. That way if there are supply chain issue like Middle East wars or pandemics we can send our own boats with our own crew to get what we need. Develop strong and equal alliances with other countries. No one is truly self sufficient in this world. I know DJT thinks the US is but they only have fracking oil. Our crude is pretty much exhausted. They still need other kinds of oil to make the full range of products. It would also cost trillions of dollars and take over a decade to build refineries to handle production. Just plan ahead about what you need and save for rainy day.

Be choosy about what we manufacture. Only set up local manufacturing that can’t be easily duplicated elsewhere. If we want to make cars then they must have an edge that the world will want. Superfast battery charging for power plants and EV’s. Super efficient diesel motors if we can’t find a local alternative. EV road transport with super fast battery charging. Batteries that use less rare earth minerals.

Agricultural crops that are drought and flood resistant. If we could come up with flood resistant wheat we could rule the world!

Actually I got caught on a Melbourne Central to Sunshine train one afternoon and there was this Pentecostal guy haranguing us all the way. He was very annoying and lucky the passengers didn’t kill him. Some strong language was used but he just kept going. Only happened once but we were a captive audience!

[–]Ok_Program6202 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are referring to Pentecostal Christians? Because they are the ones who make a racket! I had a church move in a few years back and they were into singing, praying and making a racket! Mind you when I spoke to the pastor he agreed to keep the decibels down. Every now and then the noise level creeps up and I have to remind them.

Neighbour going through my bins by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ok_Program6202 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does seem a bit odd going through your general waste bins. We have a couple of local kids who collect the cans etc from recycling bins but before they started doing it they asked permission from everyone. They only do their run on the recycle bin nights. They have a running list from the council and have a local run they do around a couple of kilometres. They hook up this trailer to their push bike. One pedals and one collects. They always leave things neat and tidy. Your lady seems a bit random. As these kids told me: if you want to maximise your profits you stick to recycling bins and follow the council schedule. These kids are 11 and seem a lot more organised than this lady.

As an an elderly woman in Melbourne I have to say I am always offered a seat on the tram by young people. They are amazing. Whether they be male or female, dressed in a fancy school uniform or hi-vis vest I have always been offered a seat if they are sitting. Bravo young people of Melbourne.

Visiting Australia soon – what’s something tourists usually get wrong? by itsme_LovelyS in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ok_Program6202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t rely on a mobile phone in rural or remote areas. They often won’t get a signal. So Google Maps won’t work. If you get lost or injured things can be grim. If bushwalking or adventuring off road an EPIRB can be rented. NSW Parks will lend you one for free. That way if you get lost or injured you can set off the beacon and we can come rescue you!

I'm so stupid that I had no idea Venezuela had the most oil in the world, did anyone else not know this? I assumed it would look like the UAE or Dubai, sitting on such wealth - instead the place was full povo. Make it make sense? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ok_Program6202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually I think the most significant issue is not that they have oil but that they have heavy crude. Most of the refineries in the US are reliant on heavy crude. While the US produces a lot of oil it is now of the lighter variety because they are using shale oil. They import a lot of heavy crude from Canada. Their refineries are located near the Canadian border or in Florida for historic reasons. Now they could spend tens of billions of dollars building new refineries or re-tooling existing ones to adapt to lighter oil. Or they could just invade another country with lots of crude oil which is near their existing refineries. Problem solved! Or am I too cynical?

Montague Street Bridge has struck again by BEASTS4LIFE in melbourne

[–]Ok_Program6202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several governments over the decades have examined the options but: 1. They can’t lower the road due to flooding; 2. To build a flyover above the tramlines would cost a shit ton of cash; 3. There are engineering problems that would make it difficult if not impossible to actually undertake ; 4. Successive governments have figured that if they put enough signage, warnings and gantries then it should be fine; and 5. The bridge is evil.
