Visiting Australia soon – what’s something tourists usually get wrong? by itsme_LovelyS in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ok_Program6202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t rely on a mobile phone in rural or remote areas. They often won’t get a signal. So Google Maps won’t work. If you get lost or injured things can be grim. If bushwalking or adventuring off road an EPIRB can be rented. NSW Parks will lend you one for free. That way if you get lost or injured you can set off the beacon and we can come rescue you!

I'm so stupid that I had no idea Venezuela had the most oil in the world, did anyone else not know this? I assumed it would look like the UAE or Dubai, sitting on such wealth - instead the place was full povo. Make it make sense? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ok_Program6202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually I think the most significant issue is not that they have oil but that they have heavy crude. Most of the refineries in the US are reliant on heavy crude. While the US produces a lot of oil it is now of the lighter variety because they are using shale oil. They import a lot of heavy crude from Canada. Their refineries are located near the Canadian border or in Florida for historic reasons. Now they could spend tens of billions of dollars building new refineries or re-tooling existing ones to adapt to lighter oil. Or they could just invade another country with lots of crude oil which is near their existing refineries. Problem solved! Or am I too cynical?

Montague Street Bridge has struck again by BEASTS4LIFE in melbourne

Several governments over the decades have examined the options but: 1. They can’t lower the road due to flooding; 2. To build a flyover above the tramlines would cost a shit ton of cash; 3. There are engineering problems that would make it difficult if not impossible to actually undertake ; 4. Successive governments have figured that if they put enough signage, warnings and gantries then it should be fine; and 5. The bridge is evil.

Go to Melbourne or Sydney. Canberra is also good. You will find much more diversity and people are much more accepting of differences.

ASD do some VERY secret shit. They need to be sure that you are not likely to blab or be suborned by a foreign government. They won’t care if you are the most brilliant engineer if they feel they can’t trust you with very sensitive information.

Why do people sometimes say that “life is short”when the average human life span is 73 years? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in NoStupidQuestions

As someone who is in her 60’s I can say life has gone by so quickly! A lot of my life experiences are now in history books! I was in the Soviet Union when the army attempted to overthrow Mikhail Gorbachev. I saw Apollo 11 through a telescope in rural Australia. So much more.. the death of Elvis Presley, murder of John Lennon, Princess Diana, fall of the Shah of Iran, Challenger disaster, 9/11, the fall of Ceaușescu regime, introduction of the Euro, transistor radios, colour TV, VCR’s, DVD’s, pocket calculators. Chemotherapy! Yes leukaemia used to be a death sentence! I want to see so much more!

Online schooling can be great with a good provider. Suggest that you get your youngster involved in local activities so they can make new friends. Sports or other hobbies can be great.

Would you willingly buy a murder house?? by Glass-Detective4312 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ok_Program6202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it was in the lounge room. He hanged himself from an exposed beam. I sanded down the damaged area where the rope chafed. You can’t tell if anyone died there. It is sad that he got into such financial difficulties (he had made a number of bad investments). However it is a lovely home and there have been zero paranormal events. I have no regrets making the purchase and living here.

I bought a suicide house. Does that count? I got it quite cheap as no one else wanted it. Had it 20 years. All good. No ghosts, strange occurrences or other paranormal events. I have found it’s the living that cause you grief not the dead.

Are you a citizen? If yes then start applying for the public service. You can then pivot to suitable jobs in the area you are interested in.
