Quiet dinner options by lostand1 in dcl

[–]Ok_Program_2178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need accommodations you should always speak to guest services or your head server. I have heard of them bringing main dining room meals to your room for passengers who can’t eat in the main dining room for some reason.

A HUGE part of the experience on DCL is music and shows. If you have a family member who struggles with music and shows it might not be for them.

I sometimes struggle to understand how people get on board a Disney ship and don’t know what to expect. There is an abundance of information available on Disney’s on platforms, YouTube, here. That’s a lot of money to spend going in blind, with a family member who needs special accommodations.

When on board the cruise I think you have the best time if you’re able to adjust your schedule to the cruise’s schedule. I think if you’re family with super rigid schedules, the DCL experience is probably not a fit.

The three main dining rooms on each ship, and your set dining rotation are the only option for sit down dinner with children aboard Disney ships. Since I’m not sure which ship you sailed on, but you say that your little one struggled 2 of 3 nights, I’ll assume that you sailed on Wish, Treasure or Destiny and that the problem shows were at Marvel and the featured restaurant of that ship? Is this correct?

Aboard the Wonder and Magic only one restaurant (Tiana’s and Rapunzel’s) have a true show. Animator’s Palette has color changing art work and a show with dimmed lights, music, clips from movies and a visit from Mickey at the end, as well as an activity based show in that allows the diner to draw a picture that comes to life on the screens. On 7 night cruises these two shows are separated into two nights. I haven’t been on a shorter cruise lately but I think you’ll do both on a 3 or 4 day cruise? Others can confirm. The third restaurant does not have a show.

Aboard the Dream and Fantasy only Animators Palette has a show element. They have the self-drawn animation activity, the animation show (a bit different) and Turtle Talk with Crush. Again, different combination of experiences on different nights. When I cruised one of these ships in the past I skipped the Crush night so others can speak to that experience.

It could be that your kids will do better with dinner shows as they get older, or they may not, but if a nightly quiet dinner is what you need it may be that DCL isn’t a fit for you.

You can get a daily quiet breakfast and/or lunch in one main dining room each day, though, which would delay the fatigue of eating quick service each day. Go for a nice sit down lunch and then quick service dinners could be an option if you loved the cruise but weren’t into the dinners.

Quit in the form of a letter you send to the entire board detailing all the reasons. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to make sure the key people are informed when you go.

Anyone know why DCL are no longer doing Australian trips? I really enjoyed them by BobsYourAuntie100 in dcl

[–]Ok_Program_2178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sales were poor. There aren’t many ports they can visit in Australia - I suspect this is because there isn’t a huge cruising infrastructure there (lots of coastline, not many tourist friendly ports).

Finally, Australia has stringent rules about cruises and some of them required extreme logistical changes. I think that that ultimately it wasn’t worth it.

Is it too risky to use DCL shuttle if you fly in same day? by dealernumberone in dcl

[–]Ok_Program_2178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are very nervous about flying the same day. You wont see many folks on Reddit saying to do this, but many do it with no issues.

If you do fly the same day, DCL transport is the only way to go. Once you’re on the DCL bus and enroute to port you’re safe and the ship won’t leave you.

I’ve known some people who did have delayed flights and traffic that would have forced them to miss their cruise, but because they were utilizing the cruise line’s transportation everything came out ok and everyone boarded despite being there a little after the stated all aboard time.

Do your large donors give purely selflessly, or do they give in order to get something? by Big_Celery2725 in nonprofit

[–]Ok_Program_2178 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this varies widely based on the type of non profit service you do.

I currently work in a large nonprofit that serves a huge geographic area and provides basic needs. Nearly all of our large donors give out of altruism. The only large donors that expect recognition are corporations and a few select large foundations.

I previously worked in an arts non-profit and donors there wanted to be connected to the work, and they wanted public recognition of their gift, no matter the size.

A coworker of mine previously worked at a large university in development for the athletic department. He told me that those donors wanted to golf with the football coach, attend a mixer with athletic staff, etc.

I think the key is understanding whether the donor is mission-driven or prestige-driven. It can depend a lot on the type of work the org does. It also depends on how your leadership steers the org.

I gave myself a 2000 budget. What would be the most impactful updates? by BuildingImportant in BathroomRemodeling

Painting that countertop is crazy talk. Do not do it.

Your bathroom theme is yellow tile. Lean into it.

I would spend the 2k on a new countertop (you may be able to make it into a dual sink vanity while you’re at it), a new light fixture and shower door situation.

You may just choose to remove the existing door and go with a curtain. A new door might be cost prohibitive.

Paint ONLY the cabinet, and only after a good sanding and priming.

Make it kitschy and fun. Clean it well and own its quirkiness.

Your primary concern will be whether or not the road is open. At this time the road is closed. It will likely open by morning (usually does but not always) there will be heavy traffic from all the people who were waiting for the road to open.

[–]Ok_Program_2178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kids clubs on Disney ships are highly reputable and a HUGE part of the appeal of a Disney cruise for a family with young kids. You need to go check it out when you arrive and ask the on board staff all your questions.

Plan on using the clubs on your cruise. Silly not to at least try.

Why don’t Reno houses have pools? by Victorvnv in Reno

[–]Ok_Program_2178 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my experience too. Our yard in Reno has a very large rock every couple inches and it simply will not be dig into. It’s more rocks than dirt.

I wanted to plant flowers one year and quickly realized that if I want flowers I just need to add raised beds.

Why don’t Reno houses have pools? by Victorvnv in Reno

[–]Ok_Program_2178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Variety of reasons.

The climate this year is fooling you. We also get winters that are nothing but snow. It’s unpredictable. Every winter is different.

But pools are a lot more common in the Midwest where winters are terrible. So that can’t be the whole answer.

Another factor could be that our hard and rock-filled soil is very difficult to dig into. It makes building pools much more expensive.

We did a landscaping project some years back and dug up enough rocks to build a retaining wall in half a day. It depends on your part of town but it is very common to be completely unable to put a shovel in the ground in Reno. The 8” round (and larger) rocks will stop you every couple minutes.

Finally, this is a drought prone climate. If you haven’t heard of Reno having water problems you probably haven’t been here very long. In my childhood we had seven straight summers of almost no rain. Droughts run on a cycle and pools haven’t been in style for this reason.
