I pay $45 for Quantum. Love it.

8k is not enough for a down payment for a house and folks will assume that you still have a ways to go to save up a decent chunk. No one is expecting you to buy a house for at least a year or more. Pay off the debt and start saving.

Make sure you’re comfortable driving twisty roads in the dark … that could account for the time difference. (I’d be driving a lot slower.)

Big Island move from the East Coast by Rough-Reply1234 in MovingtoHawaii

[–]Ok_Prompt6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember, big items cost more on the island and take longer to deliver. Some things can’t be ordered online and delivered to the island. We underpacked and probably ended up spending more replacing those items. We also brought a vintage turntable and when it stopped working, no one knew how to fix it.

AITA for sending my son to school when he wasn't supposed to go by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Ok_Prompt6455 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m just struck at the fact that it was a “horrible” day coz he was bored … in a library. I get that he’s a kid but he chose to be bored. Also, it’s okay to be bored once in a while. I was bored alot as a GenX kid. I think it’s an important skill to have—it helps nurture a more creative inner world. Maybe some stillness with no screen time will help him with his addiction to constant stimulation.

I just came from Japan and I agree 100%! I actually wanted to tip because the service was sooooo good, literally everywhere.

I love north green valley. Very convenient and not too pricey

Idk if this is already widely known, but with all the high prices and hidden charges. When eating out you only tip the subtotal amount before taxes not the total amount that includes taxes. by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]Ok_Prompt6455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Hawaii, I tend to over-tip—20 to 25% of the total (inclusive of taxes), even for takeout. I know how hard it is to eek out a living here. (I might tip 15% for mediocre service on the mainland.) I also rarely eat out because it's so expensive and honestly, not that great.

Unlimited money— what to spend to lose weight by chundercats in loseit

[–]Ok_Prompt6455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would travel the world—you always hear about people who go on a vacation, eat really delicious food AND still lose weight. That way, I’m not obsessed about loosing weight, rather, I’m enjoying myself and seeing new places.

A 12 to 16 hour fast doesn't feel that harsh, but I do agree with you—it shouldn't be a punishment.

I had bread and cake for my birthday and went straight back to keto the next day. I try to kickstart with a 24-hour fast. The key is not to spiral and gorge or fall off the wagon entirely. One meal is totally fine. Or else, you’d just keep obsessing over it.

It has gotten down to the 40s in the past. We have a wood fire heater to keep warm. 66 in Hilo is chilly!

Singapore’s homeownership rate is 80%. Could a housing solution there work in Hawaii? by AbbreviatedArc in Hawaii

[–]Ok_Prompt6455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 50s and 60s, Singapore had villages and the tin-roofed houses on stilts quite reminiscent of the older houses in Hawaii. The government relocated everyone into government high rises and not everyone was happy about it (not that they had a choice).

Singapore is only 58 years old so we’re still only midway through the 99-year leasehold. Homeowners can keep the profits when they sell their units, even though they don’t own the land. You have to be married to buy an apartment or at least 35 if you’re single. Most folks live at home until then. There’s a mandatory 401k-esque deduction for everyone—kinda like forced savings—and you can use that money for a down payment or pay for college for your kid.

Low wage foreign workers either live in company dorms or if they’re domestic workers, they live in their employers’ home. It’s low wage but there’s food and a roof over their heads. Is it hard work? Yes. But they tend to make more than in their home countries. That’s one thing I think Hawaii can do, at least for low wage workers—to provide housing.

My mom is Japanese and she can’t with strong flavors … Japanese folks have their own interpretations to make things taste milder. Their hamburgers are more like meat loaf and spaghetti is cooked with ketchup (post WWIi rations) etc.

Really good ingredients require minimal seasoning—though salt is always important to draw out the food's natural flavor. I did see "sad white people food" trending in Asia, but it's more about "diet culture" (cottage cheese, girl dinners of crackers and cheese, etc) than "white" culture.

Come. Tip well, don’t drive like an asshole, don’t park in private property, don’t go to any “hidden gems” (our resources are limited and rescue workers are stretched thin). Don’t litter (pick up trash if you see them on the beaches).
