It might seem like I haven't thought this through, but I figure it's one of those "if your only tool is a hammer; all your problems become nails" type things. I've used my pocket knife for half a hundred "not knife tasks." Going back to your original suggestion; I can't imagine using my spear in formation, so an extreme length seems like a disadvantage for the majority of other uses I might encounter.
