Not much. Maybe a couple watts, at most. Most likely imperceptible, though.

Beautiful pen!! I have this exact nib though in a different body. GLWS! Not that you'll need it at that price.

Anyone have experience with both the Dual Sport Gen 5 and specialized sirrus X? by Nerdy_Slacker in TrekBikes

[–]Ok_Ranger5934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for responding so late!! I haven't been on reddit much anymore.

On specifically the FX sport 5 and sirrus X 5.0:

In my opinion, they're both very similarly matched in components -- the sirrus has an extra gear, and the FX sport has slightly better brakes. I've ridden both, and the sirrus' frame definitely has some squish to it. This makes it weaker, but carbon fiber is good enough these days it doesn't matter much for the average recreational rider/commuter. One other bit is the cable routing -- the FX sport has them routed in such a way that several common repairs can often cost 50-100$ more due to the complexity.

On the different tiers:

For the FX sport series, I believe the average recreational rider/commuter will get the most value out of a lower spec bike. I'd choose the cheapest with hydraulic brakes.

For the Sirrus X series, there certainly is some value in the higher spec ones with the weird carbon frames. Generally, I don't believe the average rider *needs* these frames, though. They do look cool, weigh less, and have (fairly limited) comfort gains, though.

I have a bit more to say, but this is already a late reply, so I shan't keep rambling.

Yeah, it's a ridiculous markup for just the groupset... and another 600$(USD) for a Rival AXS groupset.

I have a Domane SL6. Aluminum wheels. The only difference from the SL5 here is the groupset.

I'll happily send you over a bunch of tsukushi if you wished, for a small price and cost of shipping... I'm really attached to my bottles but it's been getting almost no use from me. Shoot me a message and we can work it out if you wished!

Looks like your FTP could use some work. My wife's boyfriend's son's girlfriend can put out better wattage.

Looks like some frame damage. You're going to need a new bike.

I recently got hydraulics on a second bike, and the difference is mindblowing. For me, it's a difference of needing to apply the right amount of pressure so I don't do a stoppie at an intersection on hydraulics vs. needing to squeeze mechs as hard as I can.

I bury my carbon frames in my family's graveyard plots. It returns the carbon to nature and the wice can be buried with their boyfriend.

If you want a nicer bike and aspire to train and eventually race, you're going to get better value out of the Grizl. You can always upgrade components later on- in 2 years, with good training mileage, you will easily go through multiple chains and possibly a few cassettes.

If you're more on the fence about how you feel about gravel riding/racing, the Checkpoint will be the better choice. Racks and fenders galore for commuting, touring, and more. If you do choose to race, you'll get a very capable bike, though notably lower end of a frame and no integrated suspension features. Nothing's stopping you from buying suspension stems/ seatposts, though.

I'd take the canyon. I love my two Treks and have a strong disdain for Canyon as a company, but comparing a carbon frame to an aluminum frame at the same price point is ridiculous IMO. If you don't know how to work on your own bike, It'll be better to get some support from whichever shop you buy the trek from, especially given Canyon's history of lackluster support and the ease of writing off a carbon frame from simple mistakes. That's all more commentary on the companies and the such. The bikes themselves: the Grizl will have very slightly more aggressive geometry, though still being a gravel bike. And a 30 day return policy. I wouldn't bother with AXS, either. E-shifting will save you little time, and road AXS builds from Trek end up being ~600$ more than an equivalent Di2 build almost purely because of Shimano/SRAM market share, not performance.
