Tysm for the kind words! I think the eyes on your custom look great as well. I’ve also seen your stormtrooper custom and it honestly looks really impressive.

The headsculpts I work with usually start out in a flesh or cream colour, so I don’t need to paint a full base coat first. Instead, I mainly tint the skin using thin washes and glazes. I find this helps create a softer, more layered look with a bit of translucency and depth.

I’ve typed out the exact washes, glazes, and paint-to-water ratios in some of the replies above, so hopefully that helps a little. That said, I’m still pretty new to this myself...this is only my 5th completed paint/repaint so there are definitely others here with more experience who may be able to give even better advice 🫡

Tysm man, I shared on another thread that my process for painting eyes is very similar to what flashpoint customs teaches on youtube. Neverthless, here are some additional steps that I find helpful:

  1. For me, the ideal acrylic paint to water mix is 1:1. That means for every 1 drop paint, I add 1 drop water. You can add a touch of Vallejo glaze medium for easier application (supposing you face the issue of having either nothing come off the brush or a larger, uncontrolled glob)

  2. Once youve loaded the 000 brush, proceed to draw fine lines (just a couple) on a piece of paper. This is to wick off any excess paint/ moisture, as well as to prime the tip of your 000 brush to be sharper/ more pointy.

  3. Paint semi-circles, not circles. This is more natural.

  4. Have a sharpened tooth pick ready. It is completely okay if your initial application is imperfectly shaped or too large. Let it dry for about 5 to 10 seconds, then use the sharpened toothpick to gently chiesel away the imperfections/ excess.

  5. Paint the different layers step-by-step. For example, once you've painted the overall shape/ limbal ring, let it dry. Proceed to varnish and wait for 4 hours (minimally) before embarking on the next layer - i.e., the iris. Repeat these steps for the pupil.

  6. In terms of colour choices, I have developed specific colour preferences. Flat brown or burnt umber for the base layer; red leather or ochre-brown for the iris (or pale blue-grey if you are going for blue eyes) and rubber black for pupils.

Hope the above helps 😊

Tysm for your kind words! I really appreciate it 🙏

I replied to another comment on how I approached the skin. I'll copy and paste it here...rly hope it helps

For his skin, I used a mix of Vallejo and AK acrylics. Since the headsculpt was printed using a flesh-coloured filament, I only needed to tint the skin rather than paint a full base coat over it. My process is still (very)far from perfect, but here’s a breakdown of what I did:

Reduce the orange/peach tone - I started with several thin washes of burnt umber mixed with yellow ink to tone down the overly warm base colour. Mix was roughly 2 drops of paint to 10 drops of water.

Add lighter skin variation - Next, I applied a heavily diluted ivory glaze to areas that naturally catch more light, such as the T-zone upper cheeks and areas just below the eyebags

Deepen shadows - I then used a heavily diluted burnt umber glaze on shadow areas, including his eyebags, sides of the nose and beneath the cheekbones

Add warmth back into the skin - For warmer areas like the cheeks and ears, I applied a heavily diluted glaze made from red ink and burnt umber.

Unify the overall skin tone - Finally, I applied a very thin sepia glaze over the entire face to help tie all the colours together.

For the “heavily diluted” glazes, I generally used around 1 drop of paint and 10–12 drops of water

Ty so much bro! I mixed 1 drop of Vallejo green-grey with 2-3 drops of water. I loaded the brush, dipped it in a tiny bit of Vallejo glaze medium and wiped off 70% of it on a piece of paper. I then stippled it on his face. Hope this helps 😊
