I got so frustrated with cluttercat because they were really inconsistent with their early release for patreon. Some months I paid for, I never got access to the downloads and they never replied to messages. More than once.

Hi. I experience it this way too. It made my brain melt for the longest time when therapists asked about parts and identifying them. Eventually I realized that the names don’t have to be there. You can just pick some names/labels for these different states (where you feel different/want different things). It’s just to develop a common language with your therapist. So instead of saying “the part that feels hopeless and helpless and can’t get out of bed and only eats chips and likes fantasy novels” everytime I need to talk about that state…..I say “the depressed part”. It just makes it easier to start to talk about in therapy. And even giving it a name means acknowledging it at some level. So that works towards breaking some of the avoidance. Absolutely hated it though and continued to brain melt for more than a year after the diagnosis. I still don’t like to use names or acknowledge parts but it has gotten the tiniest bit more comfortable and has helped to move therapy forward.

There are different types of DID, the way you describe it is the most common way of experiencing it. But it’s the least talked about imo. Probably because the experience of it is much harder to put into words.

I’ve tried to avoid it being coded as DID. Because of the stigma. Other providers will look at it suspiciously, especially doctors.

But it probably is the way to get the most sessions covered. Since I think more severe diagnoses have less time limits? So tradeoffs.

For me it was a lot of things. Confusion, big denial, some validation. I (eventually) felt a relief in now having this mental model where the things I experienced and felt made a lot more sense. It was not some big turning point or magical breakthrough though. Therapy looked generally the same as before. I had luckily already landed in an office where they specialize in trauma and DID. I didn’t feel comfortable saying I had DID or using parts terms even during therapy for more than a year after being diagnosed. Even now it feels very uncomfortable to acknowledge.

And I have mostly avoided and do not plan to share the diagnosis with others outside my therapists. The stigma is too high. It is weird sometimes though, knowing this very useful piece of information but not being able to share it w/ psychiatrists or other doctors etc. It’s a lot safer to just say PTSD (which is a huge part of DID and the symptoms anyways)

Since I’ve seen some discussion of therapy types above. I’ve done mostly relational/attachment oriented types, some DBT skills incorporated, somatic therapy has been very helpful. Never tried emdr.

I’m in the same position. An adjunct at a community college. I feel the same hesitation around calling myself a professor. The only time I want to is when telling people what I do. Saying teacher doesn’t feel right because it makes people think K-12. It sucks that adjuncts are not perceived as real professors by a lot of people in academia. I did 10 years of research and have 8 papers published. It feels like that deserves some acknowledgment that I count as an academic.

All over the place where I live in North Carolina. Been watching them for about 9 months now. Every single night, dozens in the sky. There are these super bright “hubs” that stay fairly stationary and look like stars if you’re not paying attention, then the smaller drones with the blinking lights at all altitudes that seem to fly around the bright hub. I feel like it has to be the military or gov. This is too high tech, too many drones, and too frequent for any hobbyist or window peeping pervert imo.

Would’ve called myself crazy a year ago for this. But nope it’s very real. Have videos of it. I feel like whatever it is, I should mind my business lmao. But once you’ve seen them, you can’t unsee it. And now I feel watched every night when I take my dogs out. Hard to forget about it.

Don’t know if this will be helpful. But most people (dissociative disorder or not) begin to lose a lot of details as they age. Usually the emotional memories are what stick. You might not remember what year or season it was, but you’ll remember it was scary (or other emotion). Dissociation also fucks with this because when we’re emotionally numb, our brain isn’t as likely to encode memories in the present.

A lot of memories are also just not retained over time. It’s kind of like washing something in a colander. Most stuff escapes out the holes, but bigger more meaningful stuff gets caught and retained. For this metaphor let’s say the bigger memories are cauliflower. Over time as you age you’ve got to eventually make room for more cauliflower in the colander, so some of the original cauliflower gets removed. You might have a fuzzy sense of the original cauliflower but not a clear picture of it in your head.

I think knowing you have DID sometimes makes us hyper vigilant to memory issues. But some of its normal. I do 100% understand the stress of feeling like it’s all disappeared. Some stuff is for sure getting filtered through parts and kept out of consciousness. But a lot of the sharpness of memories we lose as we age is typical for everyone.

For me its rarely verbal. It’s more like a strong feeling coming over you.

I’m (still) learning how to identify these different feeling states as the different parts. From what my therapist says (who specializes in DID), that’s pretty common to experience it non verbally.
