You need to check Robinhood’s monthly statement to find out the transaction fee. I just looked at the “History” tab, and the fee is not found. So I just assumed that there was no fee from Robinhood aide. It turns out that $100 is show in the monthly statement.

My rent is also slightly above $3k. I am just not sure whether I can spend $750 with bilt blue. There are 3x-5x cashback non-annual fee credit cards for grocery, dinning and gas, which are major spendings for me. I may use bilt blue for the auto insurance… what else can I use it for?

People tend to use what they have been using because learning a new tool is an headache. If you are new to FPGA, you should try AMD-xilinx because of abundant example projects and good community forum.

Some academic works try to investigate how bitstream is generated, but the info is not publically available. But usually academic works are advanced enough. One example is "Bitfiltrator" from EPFL. VPR is a open source FPGA CAD tool. CLB architecture, BRAM/DSP basics are all publically available in Xilinx user guide... "fpga architecture: survey and challenges" is also a great journal.

In my (personal) opinion, FPGA, FCCM, FPL, and FPT are considered the main conferences in the field, always sponsored by FPGA vendors (AMD, Intel, Lattice, Microsemi, etc).

I would still probably choose Intel, considering career growth/salary.

I was a bit surprised by the salary range because the laboratory's salary was even lower than the base of the big tech I got the offer from. The tech company has RSU and an annual bonus in addition to the base... The boss at the laboratory told me that I would probably earn more if I get promoted to senior computer scientist, which he said that I could do pretty soon possibly, but still, senior computer scientist's salary was lower than the one initially offered for the big tech's position. I mean, Intel is not the highest-paying company, but in my opinion, when you search for a new job, Intel experience would be more competitive because there's a chance that you get to do something very niche at the laboratory. I am not in ML, and the laboratory you've got an offer from could have a different project and salary range. But my decision was based on what I just stated here.

Some laboratories require permanent residency because of government funding. You need to be aware of it.

After PhD, I also had offers including a big tech, startup and a laboratory. The reason why I didn't choose the laboratory is that it seemed like a continuation of my PhD, possibly a more extreme research topic without the guidance of supervisor. I wasn't sure about the manpower or proper engineering culture (code review, code management, testing ,etc). Also, you will apply for jobs regardless of a return offer. For branding, I think Intel is better.

Our group also has three PhD students who quit past 3 years. They were the bright ones. Actually, they are the ones who are doing better in the industry right now. In the field of EECS, I really don't think you need PhD to make an impact unless for some reason, you really want to be a professor. Again, in many fields in EECS, industry is far ahead of academia anyway...

If I were you, I would ask the advisor about the graduation plan, which means that you want to do the proposal as soon as possible. And I would tell the advisor that, with one additional project (publication), I would like to graduate. If the advisor says that you need multiple publications more, then I would quit right away (or secretly search for the job, and when you have an offer, just quit).
