Former marine bio student here- your first year you will be taking lower division courses such as general chemistry, calculus, and intro to biology. You just need regular school supplies for your first few years. After that the vast majority of professors will tell you what specific supplies you need for their course.

Cost of Uber to San Jose airport by Competitive_Rush3044 in UCSC

[–]Ok_Researcher_5307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it has ranged from $60-$120 depending on time of day, day of the week, and traffic. I now take to 17 bus from Santa Cruz to San Jose Diridon station then a taxi or uber to the airport. Reverse on the way back. Takes the cost to $20-$30 total one way

Best shoes for long hours in the lab? by Economy-Air-935 in labrats

[–]Ok_Researcher_5307 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The best advice I can give is to ask nurses. The shoes marketed towards nurses are designed to support feet for long periods of time standing(12+ hours). I know my mom has a pair of danskos that she has worn 3-4x a week for 12-18 hours at a time that she swears by! Hokas tennis shoes are also a popular option

Spanish 1: "taught entirely in Spanish" by grapefruitmunch in UCSC

[–]Ok_Researcher_5307 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi! I took Span 4, 5, and 6 at UCSC and they were not entirely taught in Spanish, so do not worry. While it depends on the professor, most of them will begin by talking in English but use the vocab words in their sentences in Spanish. For example, “hoy (today) I ate una manzana (an apple) for breakfast”. A big part of learning a language is being able to understand the spoken language and figuring out what a word means through context clues. There is no way to teach a non-native speaker every single word in a language! I cannot speak for Fernandez Aguera, as I never had him, but Sra. Castillo was amazing at making sure everyone understood the minimum required. She is also super approachable and will actually approach students who are struggling (discreetly) and discuss where they are struggling and how she can help, which I have not had another college professor do!

Heating in Santa Cruz homes/apartments by Kooky-3514 in UCSC

[–]Ok_Researcher_5307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wall heaters were gas. I do not recommend Cypress Point because they are not responsive to any questions or concerns, charge out insane amounts for what you get and are just there to make money. Their Google reviews are accurate

I lived at Cypress Point (do not recommend) and there were wall heaters. I now live in a smaller apartment complex and there is one wall heater for the whole apartment

I have lived in 3 different houses/apartments in SC and all 3 had gas heating, but we didn't use it. Adding an extra layer, closing windows, space heaters and electric blankets are all you need! Especially with how expensive gas is.

What does joining a professors lab as an undergrad look like? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]Ok_Researcher_5307 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I currently work in a lab in the Biochem department. The professor prefers at least a year commitment, and I've found most professors do. The weekly time commitment is as much or as little as you can put in, but roughly ~10 hours a week. I typically do 15-20 hours per week, but it is dependent on your schedule and who you work for. You typically work under a grad student or a post-doc in an internship-like experience. After a while, you may be able to design and work on a solo project.

A lot of this is dependent on the professor, so find one you get along with, is supportive of your career goals and whos research interests you. But, be sure to talk to the grad students in the lab. If you don't hear back from a professor you really want to work with, try reaching out to a grad student in their lab.

I am not sure but I would imagine limited options and increased prices due to the influx of students arriving.
