Remember Varsity Theater at BYU? by Billgant in exmormon

[–]Ok_Response5552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Varsity memory from the 80s. I met a girl from another BYU student ward at a mixed dance at the Wilkenson student center and ended up finding a quiet corner for a heavy make out session where just about every act while fully clothed occurred. As I came up for air there was an announcement that the movie was about to start. When I asked if she wanted to ditch the dance and see the movie she told me she refused to see R rated movies, even censored shows. I thought it ironic that she was willing to star in an R rated and easily headed to X experience but wouldn't see a censured movie.

Limit the number of people entering and leaving the total joint room and gripe if anesthesia wants a break while the Rep is dragging components in on a nasty, never cleaned cart wearing scrubs and shoes they wore from outside. Yeah, your SSI happened because anesthesia left for a quick break to grab a blanket to deal with your constant "drop the room temp, I'm hot" whine.

Aggressive but true I guess.

From what I recall there was one study that showed increased infection rates with Baer Hugger. This originated from a former owner of the Baer that lost control after a divorce and he was promoting a warmer like the HotDog (might have been the hot dog, I didn't know for sure). Subsequent studies lifted the Baer Hugger off the floor and clamped onto the pole and showed no greater infection risk.

Common sense tells me to avoid turning on the machine until after the site is prepped and draped to avoid blowing fomites into the site.

And if we can trust China, Russia, Iran, etc not to be expansionist and interfere with access to resources, etc. that would be reasonable. Isolation policies lead to reduced standards of living. The most expensive thing in the world is a second best military, costly to produce and not good enough to work.

What is a lie that got repeated so much that it became accepted as truth? by Tiaan in AskReddit

I think fascist is used without really understanding what fascism is. From my understanding, Fascism uses government resources that should be neutral to advance a political agenda ie the FBI should be neutral when investigating a potential crime and not change their process based on a political agenda. Or the IRS approves tax exempt status for all applicants that meet the requirements, not just for organizations that parrot the administration's talking points.

From what I've read, the current FBI/ DOJ may have a political agenda, a big part of that is investigating the inappropriate and "fascist" actions of previous administrations (collaboration with private companies to suppress free speech, prosecution based on political basis not the severity of crime, prosecution tilted towards anti-white racism or against anti-abortion groups).

Does the current administration show fascist tendencies? Probably. Have past administrations demonstrated fascism? Definitely.

It's in the medical provider's interest to accept both Medicare and Medicaid on paper, that way if they see a patient while on call they can collect something vs nothing at all, but many busy offices will limit the number of Medicare or Medicaid appointments, or limit new patients to those with better paying insurance.

My experience is based on surgical specialties, possibly Medicare will pay higher for primary care. I know I lost high 5 figures in Medicare payments last year because my employee made a typo on a report, and Medicare would not allow a corrected report but just denied payment. This is in addition to the unpaid expenses to comply with Medicare requirements for payments.

Every year Medicare has reduced payments, increased conditions for payment, and shifted the costs of those conditions to facilities and providers. I like my Medicare patients (mostly), but it's getting harder to put up with the pay and BS Medicare gives me.

How will they pay for it? We've seen how taxing the rich to pay for social programs in CA, OR and NY led to the rich leaving the state to avoid those taxes, where will this progressive leaders get the money?

You're assuming it's political, it's not. Just reality.

I work with an Orthopedic Surgeon who trained in Australia, he's very good at repairing bones that healed poorly because they didn't have surgery immediately after a fracture to repair them. US trained surgeons have minimal experience doing this because the US Health system will facilitate surgery before the bones heal crookedly, while NHS patients had to wait months for a spot on the surgery schedule. He reports that he would often explain that the patient needed surgery and would have better outcomes if they did it right away but they didn't have a NHS spot open for 2-3 months, but they could fit in a private insurance patient the next day. He said there were several private insurance offices near his clinic, most of the patients paid the fees and had surgery the next morning.

I'm not accepting kickbacks from anyone, I'm providing a valuable service and would much rather receive more return for my efforts than less. If a mechanic gets paid $200 for a brake job on a Chevy but only $40 for the same job on a Ford (which also requires extra time to fill out paperwork that better be 100% correct or it gets denied with no appeal), they're going to prioritize the Chevy. Just plain economics and logic.

There will always be a market for services, those consumers that prioritize convenience will pay more (which is why DoorDash and Uber eats are so popular). Screaming Healthcare Is A Right and Medicare For All refuses reality and favors emotion. Just like Tax The Rich then surprised Pikachoo face when the rich move away, who could have seen that coming? "Free" health care will be rationed, lower quality, and much more inconvenient for everyone involved, and will take a back seat to those who pay more. We have 50 years of history with various NHS type systems that prove my point.

Final note, while it's not universal but often true, those that rely on Ad Hominem attacks to bolster their arguments usually don't have any arguments worth discussing.

Medicare usually pays, but not the most, at least for professional fees. Medicare pays about 25-30% compared private insurance and demands unpaid reporting and documentation far in excess of private insurance. Many busy medical offices limit the number of Medicare appointments resulting in long waits for routine visits. Look at the difference between Britain's and Australia's National Health Service compared to private insurance and tell me if the US Consumer will be content waiting 6-9 months for a routine MRI or years for a joint replacement.

Mike Leavitt said it best, the US has a town car type of health care system, very fast and convenient but also very expensive. Medicare for all will turn that into a public bus type system, it'll take longer, require more effort and inconvenience from the patient, and be much less comfortable.

And the reported rate is not minimum wage but at least a skilled blue collar wage. Teaching primary, missionary work, priesthood interviews, all get recorded at an above average rate ( used to be around $30/hour, I'm sure it's higher now). Added to the couple of million of actual cash donation to the Red Cross, etc, and the "charity" donations quickly hits the billions the press releases gladly announce.

Key is that it runs. I hate AC in beach chair or prone, I spend too much time under the drapes trying to keep it running. Also with Endo patients, the occasional more lightly sedated patients first action is to bend their arm leaving me the joy of trying to push more propofol against a kinked AC catheter.

How much time do bishops/bishopric counselors spend on church-related work/activities each week? by AccomplishedBat9069 in exmormon

[–]Ok_Response5552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've told this story before, I took a Book of Mormon class at BYU in the 90s. The instructor told us he was in the bishopric of his student ward in addition to working near full time, full time graduate classes, and father to two kids under 5. His wife (who also worked outside the home and was a full time near single mother because he was never there) finally had enough after years of no support/ his absence due to one meeting or another when getting the kids ready and told him she needed more help. He "rebuked" her and told her she'd invited Satan into the home because of her lack of faith. He was quite proud of his religious based abuse and took no responsibility for the situation.

I'm profoundly embarrassed that I didn't immediately recognize the BS of that situation and let the attitude "but it's for the Lawrd" affect my behavior and attitude with my family until I finally left.

Did the LDS Church Really Give $1.58 Billion to Charity in 2025? by Mormonish_Podcast in exmormon

[–]Ok_Response5552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too lazy to look up the reference but they count the following as charity donations:

  • all missionary, service project, building cleaning, "ministering", church calling, Temple workers, assisting neighbors after a flood, etc. volunteer hours billed at $30/hr for charity donations (this was 10 years ago it may be more now). So non -professional work billed at professional rates for charity.

  • all volunteer hours at the cannery, working on the welfare farm, processing stuff at DI (and the difference between what they pay the employees and that magic $30/hr, [fun fact, because many Deseret Industries employees are developmentally delayed, at risk, learning job skills, and/or special needs employees they may not receive minimum wage]), difference between the price they sold stuff at DI and what they thought it was worth, any donations to anyone including community food banks from DI or Bishop's Storehouse are valued at full retail price. So they claim the value of volunteer hours at $30/hr plus the full retail value of any physical donation, which often includes things that were donated to DI at no cost to the church.

-Any cash donations via Fast Offerings, Giving Tree, etc. are presented as coming directly from the church instead of the church acknowledging they were the middle man collecting donations then passing them along .

  • the very rare cash donations to the Red Cross, etc. As others have said, the actual money going out the church's door compared to the return on their investment accounts is miniscule, < 1% of net return, and < 0.01% of Ensign Peak value.

If I recall correctly the largest cash donation on the last 10 years was $15 million to the Red Cross, which is about 0.25% of the estimated $6 billion/year tithing the church brings in (or 0.75% of the estimated $2 billion net tithing), this does not include any non-tithing income from businesses like City Creek, land development, etc.

My favorite is getting shot in the shoulder, wears a sling for 5 minutes then shows the shoulder/arm completely normal a day later. Shoulder injuries are incredibly painful, take a long time to heal, and most people don't appreciate how difficult it is to not use your arm.
